I need some assistance with the legal aspects of my co-owned lip butter business. As we both are nearly 15, we’re obviously considered minors legally. With starting up a business at any age, I’m aware that EIN, Federal Income Tax, Self-Employment Tax, Sales Tax Licenses, and Local Business Licenses, possibly insurance as soon as possible. Now this is where I need the assistance. Since we are in fact minors, we cannot obtain an EIN number on our own. It would be so helpful if you could clarify the age requirements for the necessities to starting a business. Also, overall, do you have any suggestions on the steps we should take to legally become a business, including the legal aspects our parents will have to take part of? This is incredibly appreciated.

Hi Gabi!
Age requirements are different by location, and I would talk to you local chamber of commerce or business licensing office so that they can give you the correct information for your business. I would also suggest asking this question at the Teach Soap Forums as there are soapers of all ages there that can give you some great advice at getting started with all the little details (like insurance, licenses, etc).

We are so excited that you are and your co-owner are pursuing this business of yours and we can’t wait to hear more about it. Be sure to keep us updated and if you get any pictures, we’d love for you to share them with us on Bramble Berry’s Facebook page.
