I was surprised when we all chose the Bittersweet Baking Chocolate as the best texture and taste. The Bittersweet Baking Chocolate beat out all the other expensive, organic, fair-trade chocolates. Of course, there’s not much marketing cachet with regular Bittersweet Baking Chocolate so keep that in mind when formulating your product for sale. Our favorite recipe is easy and simple.
Marketing Genius 101 Variation
1.0 oz. Bittersweet Baking Chocolate
.5 oz. Organic, Fair-Trade Certified Chocolate (like Seattle-based Theo)
1 oz. Beeswax
.3 oz. Sweet Almond Oil
.3 oz. Jojoba Oil
.3 oz. Avocado Oil
.1 oz. Vitamin E Oil
Marketing Points: Contains Organic, Fair-Trade Certified Chocolate! Vitamin E oil promotes supple lips! Avocado Oil is high in essential fatty acids for moisture! Jojoba oil closely mimics the skin’s natural lipid profile!
The basic proportions for our winning recipe is:
42% chocolate
29% beeswax
29% liquid oil
You can take these proportions to create your own recipe. The math looks something like this:
3 oz. total recipe
3.0 x .42 = 1.26 oz.
3.0 x .29 = .87 oz.
3.0 x .29 = .87 oz.
If you want to make a larger recipe, just substitute the “3” for whatever total weight you want your recipe to be and multiply out the math.

This was the first lip balm I tried to make, so far I have mixed it with mint, cherry, strawberry and ginger they are all wonderful. I have been using a very dark chocolate bar with it. Great recipe. Thx

Does this make your lips brownish? I’m looking for a fun flavor lip balm to make with my daughter, but don’t want her to have dark lips.
Becky with Bramble Berry says
Good morning, Jenna!
This Coco Lip Balm leaves a slight tine of brown, but nothing that’s not subtle. 🙂

I was wondering if you tried a recipe using cocoa powder. Would using cocoa powder (baking kind) and adding some coconut oil work?
Becky with Bramble Berry says
Hi Lisa!
If you add Cocoa Powder to Coconut Oil, it might be a little too mushy to act as a lip balm. But, you are in luck, we actually have done a lip balm with cocoa powder in it!

I want those tubes!! Brambleberry doesn’t carry them, at least not now, perhaps they did back when this article was made. Searching for cute tubes here…and loving that recipe 🙂
Becky with Bramble Berry says
Hi Natalie!
Unfortunately Bramble Berry doesn’t carry those tubes any longer (we loved them!). But, you could try out our push tubes and hopefully they will work for what you are doing. =)

I have a new business, so I’m REALLY new at this whole thing. I’ve been wanting to make a chocolate lip balm, and when i searched Google, i got this! 😀 Thanks Anne Marie!!

Yummy, the orange sounds like a great addition.
I haven’t tried cocoa absolute to flavor with. Obviously, you’re doing it so it sounds like it makes for a great flavor but maybe a bit pricey?
Yum though – I can imagine a cocoa absolute and vanilla absolute mix.
Just thinking about it makes me drool.
Melanie says
have you tried working with cocoa absolute at all? i’ve been doing a lip butter with it and i wonder which would be a darker brown color in the finished product – your chocolate version or the one I’m doing. i need to do a new batch soon so i might just hold a little cup to the side and try a bit of your recipe to see how it looks. i can always add some orange essential oil or something to it later to differentiate it from my usual.
Anne-Marie says
Yes, that is the easiest way that I found to get the plastic droppers to (a) not clog and (b) actually work with the thick hot chocolate-y goo.
If you find something better, definitely let me know!

Anne-Marie, Is this where we can cut the tip off a plastic dropper and fill the tubes with the lip balm?

One word…choc-o-lious! I am waiting for my order to arrive to begin the fun! I better go work out now…
