1 oz. Shea Butter
1 oz. Beeswax
1 oz. Cocoa Powder
.4 oz. Castor Oil
.8 oz. Vitamin E Oil
.9 oz. Avocado Oil
25 Heart Lip Balm Containers
STEP ONE: Combine the Beeswax, Castor Oil, Vitamin E Oil and Avocado Oil in a heat safe container and heat in the microwave for 2 minutes. Stir the mixture halfway through to ensure even mixing.
STEP TWO: Once the beeswax is melted, stir in the Shea Butter. Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds if the Shea Butter does not melt all the way down with gentle stirring.
STEP THREE: Once the mixture is completely melted, mix in the Cocoa Powder making sure there are no clumps.
Optional Step Four: Add flavor oil (if you want to). This recipe is plenty flavorful without the flavor oil added.
STEP FIVE: Pour the chocolaty mixture into your heart shaped lip butter pots and let cool. It gives a little bit of a neutral brown tint to the lips and gives a faint smell of chocolate when applied. Don’t put calories on your hips this Valentine’s Day – put ’em on your lips!

Just made a tiny test batch (changes oz measurements to ¼tsp — just enough to almost fill one lip balm tube) and I have to say, I love it so far! I had to make some substitutions, and made some changes (used Shea, Soy, Cocoa, and Pistachio butter, Candelilla and Beeswax, and Avocado, Peach, Grapeseed, and Rice Bran oils, as well as half dark chocolate powder… so a lot of changes, I guess, but the same basic formula!), but it came out feeling luxurious on my lips, and smelling so nice. I will definitely be getting some lip balm pots to make more in the future! These would make really nice gifts.

Yum! These look AMAZING! I am looking to make cheap lip balm for Christmas presents this year, and these look perfect! I was just wondering… Can I use 21oz. Castor oil instead of vitamin e oil, avocado oil, AND castor oil? (vitamin oil is somewat pricey) I also want to use so
E chocolate flavouring oil.
Thanks so much!
Becky with Bramble Berry says
Good morning, Aki!
Unfortunately with this recipe you can’t really skip the Avocado Oil, but you can take out the Vitamin E and use the Castor Oil instead. I hope this helps! 🙂
-Becky with Bramble Berry
P.S. You can totally use Chocolate Flavoring Oil as well.
Reyna says
thank you. this is helpful

sr, expiry date=?
Becky with Bramble Berry says
Hi Reyna!
When trying to figure out the shelf life of a product, you take the ingredient with the shortest shelf life, and that is about how long it will last before it may go bad.
In this particular recipe, the shelf life of most of the ingredients is about a year, so your product should last you at least a year, if not more.
I hope this helps! 🙂

Can cocoa be used to color soap? I am looking for that rich brown color for M&P.
Anne-Marie says
You can use cocoa to color MP, but you’ll want to make sure that you are mixing it really well, maybe in a bit of your FO before you add it. For a sparkly/shiny brown you can also try Cappuccino Mica https://www.brambleberry.com/Cappuccino-Mica-P3067.aspx or for milk chocolate brown you can mix Liquid Brown and Liquid Black like we did in this tutorial http://www.soapqueen.com/personal-ramblings/pepperminty-bark-soap-for-the-holidays-2/ =)

Made these tonight, and I have a question.
We used unsweetened cocoa (the kind used to make fudge), and really didn’t detect a lot of flavor. Did you use a sweetened cocoa in yours? We’re going to try it again, but with a flavoring oil added to see if it gives it the boost we think it needs.
Courtney says
We used unsweetened cocoa powder for the coloring. I agree, it has a very subtle scent to it but you can definitely taste the cocoa when you lick your lips. I think adding a flavoring oil will give it the oomph you’re looking for =) https://www.brambleberry.com/Flavoring-Oils-C177.aspx

I have just gotten into a discussion about Vegan and Beeswax – found out that many true Vegans will not partake in anything made with beeswax. So how about Carnauba or Candelilla wax? Which would be better?
Courtney says
Both of those waxes are vegetable based so you’re good to go on those for vegan friendly options. All of our EcoSoya waxes are vegan as well https://www.brambleberry.com/Search.aspx?k=ecosoya

Courtney,
Thank you so much I appreciate you clearing that up for me, and the EcoSoya I will also look into.

Arrowroot would work though I'm not sure about the 'color' – we don't want lips that look white. =) But if you don't put any dry powder in there, it totally will work but the recipe will be more oily.
Kathy says
I made these last night and they turned out great. Question: If you didn't want to make the balm chocolate, what could you substitute for the cocoa. Arrowroot powder? Not sure – any ideas?
Mystik Muses says
These look really yummy, I can't wait to try these with a little strawberry flavor oil. Thank you!

At their widest, the heart shaped pots are 1.75 in. across and a little more than 1.5 in. up in the middle of the heart.
=))

Hi Anne-Marie,
This is a GREAT idea. I'm actually gonna try it for a themed "Craving Chocolate" baby shower as favors. I had a quick question though. The website that sells the heart pots does not list the width/length of the pots. I wanted to make a sticker label to go on top of it. Is there anyway you could provide that information? We ordered the pots, but I wanted to make the labels before hand. I appreciate the help!

Hi, Love the idea of heart shaped chocolate lip balms. I saw a couple of comments about orders and I don't see where you go about ordering kits, etc. Can you point me in the right direction? I'd do these for my co-workers for Xmas, hearts or no hearts!
Anne-Marie says
Ellie,
If you are pouring and getting bubbles, pour a little warmer.
No, you do not need a preservative for lip balms – if you are selling them, you might want Vitamin E in there to help extend the shelf life of the oil but it's not necessary.
If you are pouring into the pots and it's hardening with a divot, you can:
1. Use a heat gun to remelt the top after the balms are hardened to get rid of the divot
2. Save some balm for a 2nd layer
3. Pour more cool (but then you might get air bubbles!) =)
Enjoy!
Anne-Marie says
The Shea and the Cocoa Butter don't quite work the same in lip balms because they have different melt points. Cocoa butter has a higher melt point so the balm will be harder and less spreadable with the cocoa butter.
Lori – Great point! I fixed that! =)
Lori Stoia says
sounds yummy. But what happened to step 4?

can you substitute cocoa butter for the shea butter? Will that make the lip balm harder? I just made this recipe you posted and LOVE the consistency so I was wondering if that changes if you substitute the butters and oils……
innerearthsoaps says
Ooh la la! These look lush. Thanks for sharing! x
Ellie says
How can I pour the liquid into the lip pots without it hardening and leaving a dent? Also-when I pour the liquid into lip balm tubes-as it hardens-it appears there are air bubbles. How do I prevent that? One more ?-do I need to use a preservative if I make this for sale? I have Otiphen and Opitphen Plus…..
Anne-Marie says
Cinnamon Hollow – Yay! Thanks for giving us a chance. I'm thrilled your order arrived quickly. 98% of our order ship out within 1 business day. With our location in Washington state, the western states get their packages lickety split for sure. I hope you like everything.
Anon, You could sub Olive Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil – any liquid oil (really!). It's just a matter of balancing the butters and waxes in the balm with the liquid oil. =)
Audrey says
This looks so dark and chocolatey! Does this leave a brown tint on the lips as well, like a tinted lip gloss?

looks quite a great post, it's having good information for research analysis. great job

I was wondering about a substitution also for the shea butter. Would crisco work? Or is there something else I might have on hand that I could substitute?
Thank you for this fun tutorial!

I made some of this last year with the cocoa powder and it is my all time favorite!
So smooth, so creamy and delicious!
And smells wonderful too.
I can't wait to put into those little heart containers!
Thanks Anne-Marie!

Mmm! I think I'd throw in some of my favorite flavor oil, mint julep. Then I'd have to keep myself from eating them!

I love this idea but it is too late for me to purchase the supplies to made these before Valentine's Day. Looking ahead to St.Patrick's Day, can you give us any ideas early so we can be ready with some little gifts for our friends and loved ones?

I bet that would go well with orange flavor oil too. Looks yummy!

Yes, a Chocolate or Vanilla flavor oil would be great! Make sure it's lip safe =) It will only add to the yum.
Helena, Yes, I think it's hard enough to easily go into lip balm tubes. =)
HelenasCookies says
Can these be made with regular lip balm tubes or would they be too soft?

What about adding a bit of chocolate fragrance oil to the mixture?
