Produced from the witch hazel shrub, witch hazel is a clear liquid that is often used as an astringent. The witch hazel shrub (genus: hamamelis) is a small plant that grows in North America, as well as Japan. Extracted from the leaves and bark of the North American variety (Hamamelis virginiana), witch hazel is fantastic for sensitive or dry skins because it is extremely gentle. Once the extract is obtained, water and alcohol are added for use. A clear liquid, witch hazel does have a unique, slightly sour odor.
Facebook Photo of the Week (Dec. 20th ~ Dec. 26th)
I hope you all are having a great holiday weekend! With the year coming to an end, this week has been all about looking forward to 2015. Anybody else excited for a fresh year to begin? Inspired by Pantone’s color of the year, “Marsala,” the Creamy Marsala Lip Tints are a fun way to celebrate the color trends. Made with Merlot Sparkle Mica, these tints give your lips a sheer wine-colored hue.
Family Holiday Fun
Happy Day After Christmas! I hope no matter what holiday you celebrate or how you celebrated that you had a wonderful day, filled with joy, love and laughter.
For me, I’ve realized that Christmas is twentybajillion times better with kids. They are SO excited about everything. We’ve made the celebration last even longer by incorporating Elf on the Shelf into our December. For those who don’t know Elf on the Shelf, he (or she) is a mischievous little elf that watches all your actions and reports to Santa daily on if you’ve been naughty or nice. Our elves got into so much trouble every day! In fact, the night before Christmas, they tee-peed the ENTIRE house with 2 rolls of toilet paper. Alas, they have flown back to the North Pole with Santa and will return next year.
This year’s Christmas was particularly special because cousin Alise has joined the family. She is growing like a champ, soon to overtake Lily. My sister-in-law, Cheriss, is an amazing Mom and we can’t wait for baby Alise too start walking so she can join in all the cousin fun.
Lily is wearing an outfit my Mom purchased for her (before Lily was even a twinkle in our eyes) over a decade ago. We start our holiday family time off with (not a surprise, given our family’s love of cooking and food), Christmas Eve dinner where I made a version of this lasagna and added butternut squash and spinach. It totally worked.
After we had eaten, we took in a beautiful Christmas Eve service. My Dad was thrilled to have baby Alise (yes, that’s her sitting upright in my Mom’s lap up there; she is so wide awake and alert!). All three kids did great as we adults were reminded of the true reason for the season. For the kids, the concept is still a bit esoteric and very ‘opening presents-y’. We left out cookies, milk and of course, a treat for the reindeer and Jamisen hoped that his good behavior would push him over the edge for a gift-filled Christmas morning.
Santa left a note in return saying that he was unable to fit all the gifts down the chimney and may be back to deliver more. And then, this happened. And Jamisen’s little brain exploded with unicorns, puppies and glittery fairies because life just does not get any better for a 3 year old than this:
Santa delivered quite a gift: a motorized scooter that Jamisen is so very excited about. I’ll be purchasing him a helmet to go along with that scooter if it ever goes outside.
Lily was not so sure about this Santa with the beard. Jamisen was catatonic in joy, wonder and anticipation. Alas, Santa had a few more houses to go to and was not able to stay for lunch (though he was invited).
Wishing you a loving, fun-filled holiday season week as we ponder the upcoming year and look back at the current year with a mixture of thankfulness, wistfulness and joy. Here’s a fantastic 2015 for us all!
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!
Simple Citrus Furniture Polish
With the year coming to an end, it’s time to do a little tidying up around the house to give 2015 a fresh start. If you have some wood surfaces that need polishing, this Simple Citrus Furniture Polish is easy to make and leaves wood looking refreshed. Made with a combination of beeswax, olive oil and castor oil, this polish is firm yet spreadable. Castor oil gives the polish shiny properties, and yellow beeswax creates a solid texture.
With a small amount of Orange Valencia and Lemon essential oils, this polish smells bright, clean and spring-like. I used this polish on my cutting boards, and they look brand new. To use, apply wax onto a paper towel or rag, and apply to the wood. Massage the polish in and remove any excess. Check out the 9 Bar Birchwood Mold below, one half has been polished and the other has not. What a difference a little polish makes!
Cookie-palooza + Cheesy “Cookie” Recipe
Christmas is full of delicious food, and in particular, it’s the perfect time to create cookies. This year we celebrated the cookie season with a “Cookie-palooza!” Everyone in the office and warehouse baked their favorite cookie to share and enjoy. There were so many delicious treats that the team has been enjoying them for days after…talk about a sugar rush!
Creamy Marsala Lip Tints
When making bath and beauty products, color plays a huge role. Mixing and creating your own colors is incredibly fun, and gives your creations lots of personality. Being a lover of all things colorful, I look forward to the “Color of the Year,” announced by Pantone each December. The color of the year for 2015 is “Marsala,” an earthy wine-colored red.
These lip tints give your pucker a sheer red wine hue, inspired by the color of the year. Made with the Nourish Lip Base and additional argan oil, these lip tints feel incredibly moisturizing. A small amount of Buttercreme Flavor Oil and Lip Smacking Sweet Flavor Oil add a light scent and subtle sweetness. The great thing about this color is it only requires one mica, so no complicated mixing! This tint can be applied to a brush if you’d like to avoid red color on your fingers. You can also package this tint in lip balm tubes, but keep in mind it is a softer product.

Soap Queen Cuisine: Tom Kha Gai Soup with Tofu
The weather here in the Pacific Northwest has been grey, windy and incredibly wet. Luckily, we have not yet been hit with snow (knock on wood). This kind of soggy weather puts me in the soup making mood, as you can probably tell as this is my second soup recipe in a row! Instead of the creamy, pureed Roasted Rosemary Carrot Soup from two weeks ago, I’m whipping up a lighter, spicier soup with plenty of veggies.
Tom kai gai soup is a Thai dish, made with traditional ingredients such as lemongrass, fish sauce, ginger and coconut milk. The flavors are complex and comforting, perfect for a chilly winter day. Usually made with chicken, I used tofu to get my protein fix. I also added zucchini to add an extra serving of veggies. If you’re curious, the kids aren’t a fan of this soup. Too spicy for them!
Facebook Photo of the Week (Dec. 13th ~ Dec. 19th)
There are so many sources of inspiration when it comes to soaping. Whether it’s food, nature or a certain color palette, inspiration is everywhere! This week, the textures of the sea were the inspiration for the Shimmering Sea Glass Cold Process Soap. Clear melt and pour pieces look like the glass found on the shores. With teal and purple swirls, plenty of Iridescent Glitter and an earthy scent from Lavender Forest Fragrance Oil, this soap fun and unique.
An in-the-pot swirl is used to create the interesting pattern in the soap. A fun swirl can also be created using a chopstick or dowel, as seen in the Infinity Swirl Soap on Soap Queen TV. A figure eight pattern swirls together gorgeous blue, white, pink and black hues to create a stunning look. Scented with Lime Fragrance Oil and Crisp Anjou Pear Fragrance Oil, the soap smells fresh and fruity.

Infinity Swirl Soap on Soap Queen TV
The infinity swirl is a beautiful method for adding an interesting design to your soap. And it’s really easy to do! The Multi-Pour Sectioning Tool is a re-usable tool perfect for this technique, but you can make your own out of cardboard. Although I love the wispy look, if you want a bolder design just use a swirling tool with a wider diameter (like a spoon handle) to drag more of the colors together. Scented with a blend of Lime and Crisp Anjou Pear fragrance oils, this soap smells fresh, sweet and crisp. Find out how to create it via the Soap Queen TV video below!
Cash is King and Credit is a Pawn
Recently, I had the very unpleasant experience of having a corporate credit card cut my line of credit with them by 80% for no warning and no reason. Before you start to wonder, yes, I had made every payment on time, paying in full, monthly, for the last 7 years. My credit score has remained stable. Bramble Berry’s business has grown this year (thank you, thank you, thank you!). The company is stable. I am stable. There is nothing to ‘flag’ my account that this company can explain or I can figure.
They sent me the form letter above. It’s cryptic and, it’s not even signed by a person. Meanwhile, it’s Q4, or ‘Busy Season’ when I actually use a line of credit to handle inventory swings. I have to wonder if my line of credit was cut because this company isn’t making any money off of me; I pay my line in full every month. There’s nothing to gain there. Or maybe it’s because I don’t play the Dun & Bradstreet game and refuse to give them my financial information because that information then becomes transparent to my (eh hem) fellow vendors (aka: competitors).
Shimmering Sea Glass Cold Process
The ocean is a constant source of inspiration, from the icy blue colors to the fresh ozone scents. Inspired by the textures of the sea, this Shimmering Sea Glass Cold Process uses clear melt and pour pieces to mimic the look of translucent glass found on the shore. Melt and pour pieces are embedded within the soap, and placed on top with plenty of glitter for a crystal-like effect. A simple In-the-Pot Swirl creates a fluid swirl of teal, purple and white.
Over time, the embedded melt and pour pieces may begin to shrink slightly due to the loss of moisture. Using LCP (Like Cold Process) melt and pour bases helps avoid this, because of the lower glycerin content. Embedding melt and pour soap is a great way to recycle leftover bits from previous projects.
Salvation Army Shopping Extravaganza 2014
Once you’re past a certain age, giving, rather than receiving, is what the holidays are all about. To get in the holiday spirit, every year Bramble Berry teams up with the Salvation Army to holiday shop for families in need. This year, the team shopped for more than 10 families! Team Bramble Berry had a blast picking out toys, clothing, housewares and anything else on the family’s wish list. A couple volunteer hours later, items for each person were crossed off the list.
Each team member received a list for a specific person to aid their shopping. This list included what type of items the recipient wanted, along with any sizes or personal preferences. Below, Joe and I skim the coupons for any extra savings. More savings means more presents!
Sunday Night Spotlight: Orange Essential Oil
Produced from the peel of the orange fruit, orange essential oils are well known for their bright and fruity scents. Popular in a wide variety of projects, orange essential oil is commonly used in cleaning products. Bramble Berry carries four varieties of orange essential oil: Orange Valencia Essential Oil, 10X Orange Essential Oil, Red Brazilian Mandarin and Tangerine Essential Oil. All are fantastic, but have various properties that make them distinct.
