The above photo is what happens if you accidentally choose the wrong wick size. The candle above was made with Palm Stearic Acid, giving it a mottled and unique look.
Over time, the core of the candle will burn straight down, eventually suffocating the weak candle flame.

How do you color your candles? You have color blocks for candles on bramble berry, but only tips on liquid dyes… are color blocks liquid? How do you use them?
Becky with Bramble Berry says
Hi Rae!
Our wax blocks are super easy to use and really a lot of fun for candles! A good starting rate is going to be 1 block of color for 5 pounds of wax. If you want your color to be darker, you add more in and if you want it to be lighter, add less! I hope this helps. 🙂

Hi all I’m a candle maker and I can give some hints on what went wrong yes you had the heat to high on your pot that is why we use a candy theoamter you can buy one any where now and days. Two when you have a pit in the candle it is always good to have a heat gun to melt the top of candle down to release the air traped inside. once you do let it cool down it should be a nice flat on top.
If that doesn’t work try adding a small amount of melted wax that you have left over. Never fill past the wick you already have in jar.I have done candle now for over six years and I have made the most prettest candle I ever saw.
once you start play more and more with waxes there is nothing you can not make. good luck and thank you . Sorry for any miss spelled words.

Thanks for the suggestions, we have since learned that you need to use certain size wicks for candles! =)

Hi Joanna,
The WU-450 wick worked perfectly for me when I made the candles in our glass containers with our beeswax. But since you are using the Soy wax you might want to try the WU-250.
Let me know how it works and thanks for the feedback!

anne-marie Happy New Year!!
I’m signing on as anonymous as i can not remember my sign in info!!! ahhhhhhhh…
As a retail bizz with the only candle store in town, I’m here to say the make-up and size of your wick is EVERYTHING when it comes to making a great burning candle. We have made sometimes 10 to 20 test candles for one individual scent, searching for just the perfect wick!! It’s all about the testing. AND of course the best quality ingredients you can afford. Anne-Marie, later this month, http://www.candlefind.com is adding a glowing review of our candles. Good Luck. Hugs, Joy Joy Joyous.

I’ll do a post on candle wick size choices later this week – thanks for the questions – I’m excited that there is so much interest in candles as a general topic.

Burn those lovely candles. That is why they were given to you. I make candles for myself and for family. My Mom hardly burns hers too. She said she doesn’t want to use them because I made them. Silly Mom still thinks I am 6 yo, lol. I told her I didn’t work that hard just to have someone stare at them.

Joanna: But they look so pretty! I think I’ll start using the uglier ones first.

I’ve never made candles, but I have store-bought candles that have burned like the one in your photo. Thanks to you, I now know what is wrong with them!
Joanna Schmidt says
LoveMichie, use them! Isn’t that what they are made for? To use and smell and feel warm and fuzzy?
Anne-Marie, How does one know what size wick to use?
LoveMichie says
I’ve never tried making candles but it looks like fun!
Also, I hate getting candles as presents because I want to use them so badly but never had the heart to!
BathCake says
I don’t make candles as part of my business, but I do make them for myself and family/friends.
I bought a taper mold some time back at the request of my best friend. It came with wicking, etc. I made one test batch which came out nicely, but also used all the wick that came with the mold. I have no idea what type of wick to buy for tapers or even where to get such a thing (I don’t believe Brambleberry carries taper candle supplies). All of my candles are container candles, this is my first mold.
If you have any advice, it would be most welcome! 🙂
