Here in the Pacific Northwest, there are mustaches of every kind – some flipped up, some with a little curl added. If you’d like to add a little flair to your facial hair, this Sculpting Mustache Wax is the product for you! Made with whipped cera bellina wax, this wax is a great firm yet spreadable texture. The addition of castor oil and vitamin E oil create an incredibly sticky texture, making it easy to mold your mustache into various shapes.
You may have noticed more mustaches than usual because November is prostate cancer awareness month. In order to raise awareness and funds, men take part in No-Shave November and Movember by growing out their facial hair to spark conversation about the disease.
Currently, several men at Bramble Berry are growing out their facial hair to support the cause. In addition to $150 already donated, for each participant we are donating an additional $25 to the American Cancer Society. It’s been fun to see all the beards and mustaches around the office and warehouse!
Skin-loving olive oil and hazelnut oil keep facial hair and the skin underneath moisturized and protected from the elements. Cedarwood Essential Oil adds a woodsy smell that is slightly sweet and masculine. Brown Oxide Pigment and Black Oxide Pigment can be added to give the wax a slight tint when used, or the wax can be left uncolored.
Note: The Candle Tins now hold 4 ounces by volume instead of 5 ounces. The kit comes with 5 tins, so there will be enough for any leftover wax.
12 oz. Cera Bellina Wax
2.5 oz. Olive Oil
2.5 oz. Hazelnut Oil
5 oz. Castor Oil
2 oz. Vitamin E Oil
3 mL Cedarwood Essential Oil
Brown Oxide Pigment (optional)
Black Oxide Pigment (optional)
4 Candle Tins
COLOR PREP: Disperse 1 teaspoon of each colorant into 1 tablespoon of hazelnut oil. Use a mini mixer to get the clumps of color worked out smoothly.
ONE: In a large heat-safe container, mix together the cera bellina wax, olive oil, hazelnut oil, castor oil and vitamin E oil. Melt on 45-second bursts and stir often until the wax is melted.
TWO: Pour the mixture evenly into three large heat-safe containers. There should be about 8 oz. in each container.
THREE: Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, begin whipping the mixture in the first container. When the wax starts to solidify, add 1 mL of the Cedarwood Essential Oil. Scrape the sides of the bowl and continue to whip. Whipping the mixture helps create a more spreadable product that is easier to apply.
FOUR: Whip the mixture until it is solid but still spreadable. This will take around 2-5 minutes, depending on how hot your mixture is.
FIVE: Spoon the mixture into a candle tin and smooth with the back of a spoon.
SIX: Repeat step three in the second container. When the wax starts to solidify, add 1 mL of the Cedarwood Essential Oil and 1 tablespoon of the dispersed black oxide. Scrape the sides of the bowl and whip until the mixture is solid but spreadable. Spoon the mixture into a candle tin and smooth with the back of a spoon.
SEVEN: Repeat step three in the third container. When the wax starts to solidify, add 1 mL of the Cedarwood Essential Oil and 1 tablespoon of the dispersed brown oxide. Scrape the sides of the bowl and whip until the mixture is solid bit spreadable. Spoon the mixture into a candle tin and smooth with the back of a spoon.
EIGHT: Wait for the wax to cool before giving it away or using it to sculpt your mustache! To use, apply the wax on your fingertips and work it into your mustache.

Hi there –
My brother shells out good money for products for his big beard and ‘stache, so I’m looking at making some… I want to make this, and have a couple questions first…
If my math is right, this starts with 24oz of ingredients – but then yields 3 – 5oz tins? Do I need more tins to package the whole batch? Or is the 12oz of cera bellina a typo? If it were 1.2oz, then it would add up to 13.2oz wax/oils, which seems like it would fill 3 – 5oz tins once it was whipped?
Oh… but on the candle tin listing description, it says they hold 4oz by volume? Help!
Thanks so much!
~Kelly
Kelsey says
Hi Kelly!
The recipe amounts are correct! The ingredients are fairly dense, so you are able to get a lot into a container that’s 5 ounces by volume. That also accounts for any leftover in the bowl. Because it’s a thick, sticky recipe, it can be tricky to get all of it scraped out. We made the recipe so you would have 3 tins for sure, with a little extra depending on how tightly the tins are packed. The kit does come with 5 candle tins just in case there are leftovers.
This recipe was made in our old candle tins, which used to be 5 ounces. The new tins, which hold 4 ounces, come in packs of 5. So, the 5 candle tins should be enough for this recipe. I went ahead and updated the blog with a note to help clear that up! 🙂

I am curious about your thoughts on swapping out some of the oils above:
Do you think perhaps Hemp Seed or Safflower Oil would make good substitutes for the Olive Oil? Or maybe the Green Tea Seed Oil you carry at Bramble Berry? (Both Hemp and Saff are less comedogenic than the Olive Oil – I don’t know how pore clogging the Green Tea Seed is.) Or do you think they would they make it to soft to hold?
I’d also want to swap out the Hazelnut so it’s nut-free and has a longer shelf life. I’m not sure of what would I should try as a replacement?
(Obviously, it would all need to be tested to say for certain. I was just wondering if you had some thoughts about what might be some good paths to experiment with first. Thanks!)
Kelsey says
Hi Sandra!
You can use hemp seed or safflower if you like! They are more lightweight than olive oil so the recipe will feel a bit different. As far as hazelnut, grapeseed, apricot kernel and hemp seed oil would work as substitutes because they have a similar feeling. As you know, a small test batch helps to check the consistency! 🙂

Cassandra Morehouse says
Does the uncolored one show up white on the mustache or is it clear? I am asking because you mention the black and brown was to match hair color. Also what if they are red or blond?
Kelsey says
A small amount of the white mustache wax shouldn’t show up! However, the more you add the more likely there will be a subtle white cast. The black and brown help disguise any white cast. For blonde hair, the white one should work fine. You can also add a touch of yellow oxide. For red, you can add a touch of Brick Red. If the hair has an orange tint, you can mix in a pinch of Tangerine Wow Colorant. 🙂

Please!!
so I love this product but how can I clean up the left overs. how can i make it easier?
Kelsey says
Hi Cassandra!
Wax can be a bit tricky to clean up for sure! If you have any melt and pour soap, that helps clean it up easily. See how to use melt and pour to clean the containers in this video: https://www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lip-products/clean-oily-containers/
If you don’t have melt and pour on hand, there is another method! While the wax is still warm, spray it liberally with 99% isopropyl alcohol and wipe off as much of the wax as you can. If it starts to harden on you, you can melt it in the microwave for 5 second bursts. Then, spray with alcohol and wipe again before washing with warm water and dish soap. Wiping out all the extra wax before washing makes clean up a little easier. 🙂

Sean says
I was curious does it hard after applied or does it stay sticky and soft? ** sorry if I lover looked the answer to this so far**
Kelsey says
Hey Sean!
That’s a great question! In the container, the wax is rather sticky. When applied to a beard or mustache, it will harden slightly, but can still be sticky to the touch. It’s a lot like hair pomade! It locks the hairs in place nicely. 🙂

Sorry for the logo pic. I am using my phone & seemed to have picked it up somehow !
Kelsey says
Hi Britt!
We did a lot of testing with this recipe, and found that cera bellina wax works best. It creates a scoopable, spreadable texture that feels really nice on hair. You can try this recipe with candelilla wax though! I would recommend a small test batch so you can see what you think of the final consistency. 🙂

Hi I have a question about this mustache wax recipe?
Can this be used as a eyebrow wax to shape , color and control eyebrows?
Kelsey says
Hi Robin!
We didn’t try this recipe on eyebrows, but I believe it would work! It’s very sticky and sculpting, which would be great for flyaway eyebrow hairs. 🙂
The colors in this recipe are designed to match hair, but not color it. I would recommend trying a small amount on your brows. If you want it darker, you can add more color.

Absolutely! This wax has a sticky, firm texture that’s perfect for shaping facial hair. It will definitely support a twist. 🙂

Carly says
I don’t have any cera bellina wax around at the moment, but would love to try this – would beeswax or candelilla wax work instead?
Kelsey says
Hi Carly!
We tested this recipe out a lot and found that cera bellina wax worked the best. It gives the wax a nice pliable texture so it’s easy to scoop out of the tin and apply.
When we tried this recipe with beeswax, it created a harder wax that wasn’t as easy to remove from the tin. So you can use beeswax, just keep that in mind.
Also, we didn’t test this recipe with candelilla wax, so I’m not sure if it would work in this recipe! A small test batch may be helpful. 🙂
