It’s important to keep skin protected from the elements all the time but especially when ski sports are involved (water or snow). In particular, lips can be extra sensitive and require additional TLC. Whether it’s harsh sun or cold winds, this Shimmery Ski Lip Balm hydrates and protects lips. The combination of coconut oil, avocado oil, beeswax and cera bellina wax creates a firm yet spreadable texture. Avocado oil contains natural B vitamins, while white beeswax creates a protecting barrier. If you don’t have white beeswax on hand, yellow beeswax would work as well.
A hint of Peach Shimmer Mica adds a highlighting effect to the balm. If you’d like the balm to leave color on your lips, feel free to add more mica until you get the color you like. The “Spoon Trick” is a great way to test the color and consistency of your balms before pouring. Click here to learn how. While specifically formulated with lips in mind, this product is suitable to use on the body as well!
What You’ll Need:
5 Push Tubes, Clear
3 oz. Avocado Oil
1 oz. Coconut Oil
1 oz. White Beeswax
.7 oz. Cera Bellina Wax
5 mL Vitamin E Oil
6 mL Winter Clementine Flavor Oil
1.5 tsp. Peach Shimmer Mica
Click here to add everything you need for this project to your Bramble Berry shopping cart!
ONE: In a small heatsafe container, add the coconut oil and avocado oil. If your coconut oil is solid, melt before adding to the container. Then, add the vitamin E oil and stir to combine.
TWO: Add the white beeswax and cera bellina wax into the container, and heat the container in the microwave using 30 second bursts until the waxes have completely melted. Be careful when removing the container from the microwave, as it may be very hot. Also be sure to use an appropriately sized container for the batch (lots of head space = possibility for overheating and cracking glass heat safe containers).
THREE: Add the Winter Clementine Flavor Oil and stir to combine. Remember: if you’re making a body balm but there’s any chance this will go on lips, you need to use a lip safe flavoring or lip safe essential oil.
FOUR: Add the Peach Shimmer Mica, and stir thoroughly to combine and get rid of any clumps. If you prefer more color and shimmer, feel free to add more until you are happy with the effect. To test the color, try the Spoon Trick! Remember, not all micas are lip safe. Be sure to use a lip safe colorant if using this balm for lips.
FIVE: Once the mica is thoroughly mixed in, check the temperature of the mixture. You don’t want to pour the mixture while it’s too hot, or the mica may sink to the bottom. Once the mixture has cooled to about 130-140 ° F, carefully pour the mixture into the push tubes and allow to fully cool and harden. I found this filled 4 tubes up to the tip top, but this recipe would also comfortably make 5 tubes. Enjoy!

can you substitute a different oil for the avocado oil?
Kelsey with Bramble Berry says
Yes, you can use another lightweight oil. Sweet almond and argan are good substitutes.

I have my ingredients for this recipe being delivered today! Quick question…I would assume oz are by weight, not volume, as I’m primarily a CP soap maker, but thought I’d better ask first as it’s not specified… it looks in the photos as if your going by volume…TIA!
Kelsey says
This recipe uses ounces by weight for all the lip balm oils and waxes! We use those for almost all our recipes because we feel they’re more accurate. The color and flavor oil amounts are by volume. 🙂

Oh, I wish I could post a photo – they are SO FUN! I ordered 3 different micas, split the wax/oil into smaller containers to mix/match micas and tinker with saturation, and have 5 glorious tubes of yummy! I immediately test drove the product on a playdate to the park over Make Up Forever foundation/primer, and they double as cheek highlighters! LOVE!
Kelsey says
Oh that’s awesome, love double duty products! Also, feel free to share a picture on our Facebook page. We’d love to see. 🙂

can you make this lip balm without the Cera bellina wax????
Kelsey says
Hi Kayla!
Cera bellina wax has a unique, gel-like texture that gives the balm a bit of shine and helps it spread nicely. You can make the balm without it, but it will lose some of the shine and spreadability.
If you want the balm more firm, you can replace that amount with beeswax. For a softer balm, you can increase the avocado or coconut oil. I would recommend making a small test batch so you can get the consistency you like. 🙂

Hi y did my melted thing bcum hard s soon it’s out from microwave. ;(
Kelsey says
Hi Uma!
When the base is removed from the microwave, it will start to harden fairly quickly. If it hardens on you before you can add color and fragrance, just pop it back in the microwave on 5 second bursts until it’s melted again. Once it’s melted, mix everything in well and pour into push tubes. 🙂

N I used clear twist tubes instead the push tubes. Once I twist up the balm refuse to go in bk. I have to use finger n push it in. Plz help wat i cld do. n thy look like Breslin not even whnever I twist in n out. Since it’s clear tube I cld c even inside its not even. ;(
I luv the color n he whole thing about tis balm expt tis. Plz help. Tq
Kelsey says
Hi Uma!
Hmm, I’m wondering if the balm was a bit too hard when it was poured. That can make the balm a bit uneven inside the tube.
I would recommend pushing the tube all the way up and breaking that balm off into a bowl. Then, heat again. A great pouring temperature is about 130-140F. When it’s around that temperature, you can pour it back into the tubes (make sure to scroll the bottom all the way down). That should give the tubes a more even look. 🙂

Hi kelsey
Appreciate yr reply a lot.. btw i can use twist tubes rite or izit a muz to use push tubes?
N how long shld i let thm sit once done pourin the content to the tubes? Tq so much for the asistance n yes i doubt on the temperature s u said. Tq once again.
Kelsey says
You can definitely use twist up Lip Balm tubes for this recipe! Both the Lip Balm Tubes and Push Tubes work well. 🙂
Clear Lip Balm Tubes: https://www.brambleberry.com/Clear-Lip-Balm-Tubes-P4750.aspx
I would recommend waiting about 1-3 hours for the lip balm to cool. Once it’s hard and the tubes are room temperature to the touch, you can use that balm.
Also, you’re very welcome! We are happy to help. 🙂

I’ve heard of some of our students using candelilla wax instead of beeswax in case they’re vegan. Might be an interesting recipe to do in the future 🙂
Kelsey says
Absolutely, thanks so much for your suggestion! I love the way candelilla wax feels in lip balm. We have a couple recipes with it I’ll include below. 🙂
