The series kicks off with this Goat Milk Bath Tea tutorial, which features a soothing blend of essential oils, Epsom salts, and of course, skin-nourishing goat milk.
What You’ll Need:
3 tbsp. Powdered Goat Milk
2 tbsp. Grade 1 Lavender Buds
2 tbsp. Colloidal Oatmeal
5 tbsp. Extra Fine Epsom Salt
8 oz. Plastic Bail Jar
2 mL Lavender 40/42 Essential Oil
1 mL Chamomile Essential Oil
5 Large Sealable Tea Bags
Droppers
Click here to add everything you need for this project to your Bramble Berry shopping cart!
ONE: In a large bowl, combine the Epsom Salts and the Lavender 40/42 & Chamomile Essential Oils. You can use a spoon to mix, but we found it easier to put gloves on and dive right in!
TWO: Once the essential oil is fully mixed into the Epsom Salts, add the Powdered Goat Milk. It tends to clump up, so break it apart with your fingers and mix.
THREE: Add the colloidal oatmeal and lavender buds.
FOUR: Once the ingredients are fully combined, package into an 8 oz. Glass Bail Jar.
FIVE: When you’re ready to use it, package the tea in our Large Sealable Tea Bags. Fill each tea bag with about one to two tablespoons of bath tea and then seal the bags by ironing. You don’t want to over fill the bag or else the tea won’t disperse as well, so plenty of empty space in the bag is okay. One full bail jar will make between 7 – 10 tea bags depending on how liberal your tablespoons are.
Enjoy your bath tea by putting it in the bath and slightly agitating it by moving it back and forth to help release all the soothing goodness.

Can you use fragrance oils at the same amount as the essential oils?
Kelsey says
Hi Jennifer!
You can definitely add fragrance oil to this mix! I would recommend adding the same amount as the essential oils to start with. If you want it a bit stronger, you can add another mL or so. 🙂

Does this need any type of preservative? I realize that there is no water in it but I thought powdered goat milk could cause problems?
Kelsey says
Hi Kellie!
This recipe doesn’t need a preservative! Preservatives are needed when the recipe is made with water (lotion), or will have a preservative splashed into it (scrub stored in the shower). We recommend storing the bath tea in a cool, dry place in between uses, so it shouldn’t get water splashed into it. Read more about preservatives here: http://www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/talk-it-out-tuesday-preservatives/
While the preservatives help protect against mold and bacteria, they don’t prevent milk from spoiling. So, the shelf life of the milk won’t be extended if one is added. Because of the milk powder, this recipe has a shelf life of about 2 months. Make sure to keep it in a cool, dark place to ensure it stays fresh! You can also keep it in the fridge to extend that shelf life slightly. 🙂

Veronica Philipp says
Can I add some oils/butter to this recipe, such as cocoa butter or shea butter? Will the butter interfere or react negatively with the Epsom salt or goat milk power?
Thanks,
Veronica
Kelsey says
Hi Veronica!
We didn’t try this recipe with butter, but I believe that would be OK! I would recommend melting the butter and then letting it cool to 130F or below before adding it to the mixture. That way it won’t melt the salt. Then, mix that in well and spoon into the bags!
A small test batch would be really helpful to see how those butters mix in. Also, they can make the tub slippery, so be careful when exiting. 🙂

Thanks for all the recipes you offer. They are really appreciated.
I love all your ideas and recipes but just want to comment that it would be super nice to have a printer friendly version of the recipe available. I have to write everything out because there’s no way I can have a computer, tablet or phone anywhere near the mess I am about to make!!
Kelsey says
You’re welcome Molly! Glad you’re enjoying the recipes. 🙂
Also, thank you so much for your great suggestion. Our blog was recently updated and we are now putting easily printable recipe cards on all of our tutorials. You can see that in our most recent recipe: http://www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/melt-and-pour-soap/star-anise-melt-pour-bar-tutorial/
We have been working on adding those cards to all our recipes, but we do have quite a few to update! Thanks so much for your patience while we work on adding those. 🙂

I heard goat milk has a funny smell will that smell come out once you drop it in the tub and can you add a fragrance oil or essential oil to it
Kelsey says
Hi Adrian!
Goat milk does have a distinct odor that may be surprising if you’ve never smelled it before. However, this recipe uses a combination of Lavender 40/42 Essential Oil and Chamomile Essential Oil that smell lovely in your tub. You can also add a combination of any fragrance or essential oil you like to this recipe. 🙂
Keep in mind some essential oils can cause a cooling effect or irritation if too much is used. We recommend reading the description of the oil on brambleberry.com before adding it to your recipes.

This sounds like a fantastic recipe. I was wondering if there was some way to incorporate fresh frozen goat’s milk somehow? Please let me know if you are able. Thank you!
Kelsey says
Hi Dee!
Using fresh goat milk would change the tea into a liquid, so I’m not sure if it would work in this recipe!
If you find a formula that works for you, let us know. 🙂

Can’t you just place a spoonful directly in the bath water?
Amanda says
Hi Dusty!
Oh you could definitely do that! Whatever you prefer :).

Could this bath tea be placed in one of BB’s muslin bags as well? I can’t wait to try this.
Amanda says
Hi Suzanne!
I think that would work fine. Just make sure you don’t fill up the bag too much, otherwise the tea will not be able to get out 🙂
