I tried this recipe with colloidal oatmeal instead of powdered milk since I didnt have any powdered milk on hand, and it seemed to work just as well, would this extend the shelf life since the powdered milk has been left out?
Becky with Bramble Berry says
Hi Elizabeth!
The way to determine the shelf life of any product that you create is to find the shortest shelf life of your individual ingredients. In this case, it would be your colloidal oatmeal which has a shelf life of 1-2 years.
For other ingredients shelf lives, you can check at this Teach Soap Forum post:

I hope this helps! π

I wanted an air tight container to resolve the clumping issue, but love the look of the metal tins….so I made up the foot soak and packaged it in the cute metal tins, and wrapped that in clear plastic, sealed with a heat gun just like your tutorial on packaging soap! It worked great! Thought you all would like to know! Happy soaping!
Becky with Bramble Berry says
I am so glad to hear that it worked so well for you! I think the metal tins are just adorable and work for so many different projects.
If you’ve taken pictures, you should share them with us on our Facebook page!

Is the measure of 1 oz for each of the dry ingredients by weight? Or can I measure 1 oz in a measuring cup, e.g. by volume?
Mandy Doster says
I did it by volume to make a bigger batch. 1:1:1:1/2 ratio. Milk,Cit acid,BS,Jojo oil. I did guess on the amount of fragrance oil. I only added enough until the jojoba oil had a light pumpkin pie vanilla ice cream smell. Good luck.
Anne-Marie says
It is by weight but looking at the recipe, doing it by volume would still give you a great end product (a lot of recipes won’t let you switch to volume but in this case, the amounts are equal and they’re mostly dry products so it will work). I love Mandy’s suggestion below about adding enough liquid jojoba oil until you get the consistency you’d like.
Mandy Doster says
I just made this with the fall pumpkin scent mixed with vanilla frosting. I call it Frightfully Fizzy Pumpkin Pie Foot Soak. I sampled the little left in the bowl and WOW refreshing and fabulous. This is a excellent tutorial!!! I cant wait to put it on my etsy shop…THANK YOU!!!
Colleen O'Meara says
Why not Food Saver? Mine has a “jar” attachment. I suck out the air in my jars of veggies and lettuce and it lasts for weeks.
Anne-Marie says
You certainly could try that! It’s an interesting idea and I really would love to hear how it goes.
Courtney says
Yes. This is just a small, one time use recipe that fits into a 4 oz tin. Then pour the entire tin into some warm water for an amazing foot soak. The Vanilla Peppermint combo is AMAZING…seriously!

Tina says
Thanks! I’ll be making 24 of them soon for baby shower favors. I plan on putting them in little baby bottles π For making such a large amount, would you recommend doing one large batch or multiple small ones? Thanks again, I love this blog!!!
Courtney says
I would definitely do a large batch to save time. Just multiply the recipe by 24. Sounds like a cute shower favor!

Tina says
Just made the whole huge batch!! I ended up using the sample fragrance included, Ginger Fish, since the Rosemary Peppermint smelled a little too medicine-y. I just tested it, and it got really fizzy!!! Love the scent too. However, the soak got a little chunky towards the end. Did I do something wrong? Or maybe I just needed more water in the foo tub?
Courtney says
The white clumps in the bottom are probably just undissolved citric acid or baking soda clumps. Nothing to worry about. Just make sure to break up those clumps when you’re mixing the dry ingredients so they’ll dissolve in the hot water.
P.S. Did you get the mix into baby bottles like you were originally thinking?
Courtney from Bramble Berry
Tina says
I did!! Everyone seemed to love them! Here’s the link: Danielle's Shower FavorsHope it works, haven’t used Picasa before! Thanks for the recipe π
Tina says
Hi! Just wondering- does this whole recipe fit into the tin? I’m trying to figure out how many supplies to order! Thanks π
Anne-Marie says
PS – A fully airtight container might do better?
Chris says
I’m happy to know that you had similar results and it wasn’t just me! π I’m going to try it in my low profile amber jars and see how it does.
Anne-Marie says
Keep me posted; bath fizzies are hard to keep free blowing (thus selling it in the hard packed little shapes that are more traditional).
Chris says
Thank you for the recipe. Will it help if I put a packet of silica gel packet in the same contain to help draw out moisture (may also extend shelf life)?
Courtney says
I would stay away from that if I were you. It may end up soaking up some of the fragrance and essential oils as well. If you try it though, definitely let me know how it goes!

Laura says
I too had this result in plastic containers. Is there any air tight containers that anyone knows of? Also any liquid tight containers as well (the ones on the site don’t say if they are). Thanks again for a wonderful recipe. It leaves a nice light coat of oil on your skin, and fizzes well, even after it does harden in the container. π
Anne-Marie says
Bail jars? https://www.brambleberry.com/Search.aspx?k=bail Just an idea ….
Chris says
This was super easy to make and really fizzed up – I loved it. Question, I put mine in the tin but it is kinda “moisty and hard/clumpy” now (the next morning). Does it not really stay dry and free-flowing or is it just my tin?
Anne-Marie says
You are right – it doesn’t stay very dry flowing and definitely draws moisture to it from the air. I’d say it’s more of a ‘single serving’ type of recipe.
Crystal says
Is this recipe safe for jetted foot soak machines? I have a client requesting that I make a foot soak for her spa tub and wanted to know if this recipe would be safe.
Anne-Marie says
I wouldn’t personally ever make anything for a jetted foot tub without calling the manufacturer to ask them. I see lots of commercial products on the market with similar recipes but going the extra step and calling the jetted tub manufacturer would definitely be in your best interests. =)
Nublu says
How many baths do i get from one container? Can i use grape seed oil instead of jojoba? Does grape seed oil also have a different feel? π
thanks!
Anne-Marie says
Yes, you can use grapeseed oil instead of jojoba. Yes, grapeseed oil has a different feel. I’d use roughly 1/2 ounce of soak in a small foot tub or 2 ounces of soak in a bathtub.
Anne-Marie says
Melissa,
In theory, you could use any sort of oil for your project but the jojoba oil is very light and is actually a liquid wax so it feels really nice on the skin.
The project will work with another oil but it will have a slightly different feel.
Melissa says
Are you able to use any other types of oils?
Joanna says
I love the fluffiness of it!
Merryn says
I’ve got to make this for myself! Forget just for mother’s day – how about every day!
Anne-Marie says
Hi Julie – The Shelf Life should be at least three months if not longer. The milk powder is the weak link and preservatives probably will not keep it from starting to smell bad once it has been exposed to moisture.
JulieK says
What would the shelf life be on this product? Does it need a preservative of any type in order for it to last longer? Thanks much – keep the recipes coming. I absolutely love them!
Anne-Marie says
Aandmcreations, I am so excited that you were able to use the SoapQueenTV episode to tell your Mom how blogs can be used to education and inform. Yippeee!
kat, We’ve been working/fighting for the trademark for about 10 years now. Because of various complexities with the trademark, we had to sit on a “supplemental register” for five years in case there was anyone that wanted to speak out/up against us getting the trademark. So, though we did apply 10 years ago, went through many rounds of applications, and were granted the partial trademark about 5-6 years ago, now our trademark is secure and permanent. It’s a great feeling.
As for you and your visioning and dreaming, good job! That’s just what you should be doing right now – planning your best future.
katw0man says
I am so excited! I have absolutely everything to make all these….from BB of course… (mostly!)
Anne-Marie, just want to say you made my day…in an inadvertant way! the best kind! i just looked over to your side bar on twitpics and saw that you just got your trademark. that makes me feel better…i was just totally stressing about the whole trademark, packaging, labeling issues a moment ago. i had found this awesome website;
soapandpaperfactory.com when i was looking for baskets or boxes, etc. and saw their products. of a caliber that i imagine for myself with i sit down and dream about my company vision. but it feels so very very very far far away to come to an actuality. and i am even afraid to call for a quote to ask what minimums are to get a finished product in packaging like that. but that is what i am shooting for; beauty and elegance.
guess for now i will just sell my stuff and save my money and then invest in some super duper packaging that will put forth the image and perceived value and essence of what the products are trying to say in and of themselves…… pressing onto excellence.
we just keep pressin’ pressin’ pressin’ on!
so, inadvertantly, i feel somewhat better that you just got your trademark. it might sound twisted but it is an encouragement to keep pressin’ on! is that understandable?

Just a note, took my not so computer literate mom, and retired school teacher to SoapQueen yesterday to show her how BLOGS can be used in a positive learning fashion. (She had asked some questions about what blogging was all about) She was “UUUing and AAAin” over the Mother’s Days Ideas. Thanks SoapQueen, on both accounts!!
