Dear Anne Marie, HELP!
I made this recipe and used the 4oz cocoa butter. How can I fix this, they won’t even set up. Do I have to make 3x recipe w/o cocoa butter? I will end up with a lot of candles with the same scent. Help.
thanks
Anne-Marie says
Wait – so you used 4X the amount of cocoa butter the recipe called for? If so, toss those little guys in the fridge and they’ll set up. That should actually make a harder recipe than the original one. Keep me posted!
Anntoinette says
Ok so I just got your message. I didn’t refrigerate but the candles were in a cold room up til today, 10/29. The are still not hard. So my thinking is to make the recipe 3x without the cocoa butter and combine with the previous mixture. Once I have done that, I will seperate into 4 batches and scent and mold them. What do you think?
Amber with Bramble Berry says
One thing to keep in mind – these are always kind of squishy because of the extra oils. I think with the extra Cocoa Butter your candle is actually harder than the ones Anne-Marie formulated 2 years ago. So you might just try it out before you go to the trouble of re-making the recipe.

thanks for trying to help me but after all of that time, they didn’t set up at all. I have made a massage candle from a different recipe and it set up fine. I really just was trying to find a way to resolve this without having to go to too much expense. i am going to be selling the candles but it is just not the right time financially. thanks
Anntoinette says
p s to my last comment, i will be using some as lotion bars too.
Krystal says
Wondering if I could use just shea butter? I have lots, but don’t have any cocoa butter.
Jo says
Hi
Can I substitute soy wax with beeswax?
Courtney says
Other waxes won’t spread on the skin as nicely so I personally would just stick with the soy wax. Plus soy wax as a lower melting point so it won’t be scalding hot when it’s time to apply. Definitely do a small test batch with the soy and beeswax to see if it’s something you like. I’ve tried beeswax and it was warmer than I was comfortable with. I would hate for anyone to get burned. Let us know what you think if you do decide to give it a try =)

Hello Anne-Marie,
I just LOVE your videos, and I can’t wait to make these massage candles, I would like to make a couple of batches with different scents.
1. I was wondering if I could substitute the patchouli/sandalwood essentials oil for patchouli/lavender or just lavender? Would I use the same ratio? If yes, which lavender essential oil do you suggest? (My hubby loves lavender)
2. Can I infuse Calendula into the oils? If yes how many ounces should I use for one batch?
Anne-Marie says
Thank you for watching =)
Yes, you can do straight Lavender or a Patchouli/Lavender blend and use it at the same ratio. It will be a fairly strong scent so it also works as a great candle scent so if you’d like it to be a little weaker (because you’re using it primarily for massage), use 25% less.
Yes, you can infuse Calendula but it’s easiest to infuse into liquid oils so you’ll only be infusing the 4 oz. of liquid oil. The key is to use enough herbs to be nice and soupy but not have dry herbs. My guess is that with 4 oz. of oil that you’ll be able to do 4-6 ounces of herbs (by volume).
If you haven’t seen the infusion blog post, you might search for that to get a good look at how that works.

Thank you so much Anne-Marie, I’ve seen all of your videos! I love them ๐ Thank you for sharing your great ideas.
I would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year!
Anne-Marie says
Aw thanks. That is sweet. I really am so thankful for my family, my friends and my Soap Queen community. Thank you for your support and trust =)
Laura says
Has anyone ever did a burn test in how many hours these candles last? I Like mine too much to just let it burn but I keep getting this question ๐ So far I have gotten 3 back massages and probably used 1/6 of the candle so they last great. But Anne-Marie is right they do get a little hot for pouring right on the small of your back, but it quickly cools. lol
Anne-Marie says
I have not done a full burn test – mostly because I’ve always poured them out midway through! =) If you end up doing one, let us know. I’m curious too now =)
Margie says
Thank you for your wonderful site! I used CB 135 soy wax because it was a cosmetic blend. Now the candle keeps crackling. Do you have any idea why this may be happening? It seems like their may be some type of moisture in this type of wax.
When I made the candle with Soy 444 I didn’t have this problem. I would really like to use the cosmetic blend but am wondering how I can stop this crackling. ๐ I would appreciate any advice you have to offer. Thank you so much! ๐
Courtney says
You used the EcoSoya 135? What temperatures are you using? My guess is that it’s a heat issue.

I too like the last poster had problems with this. I followed the recipe exactly, I even watched the video step by step as I made them. I used the lavender (40/42 ? something) essential oil though for fragrance. The bottom layer seems hardish, but the top is liquid and grainy looking once I moved the candles. They looked perfect when they were poured, and I used the temp gun and thermometer to make sure I poured at the right temperature. I was totally bummed and haven’t gotten up the courage to try again.. Any ideas, as to what happened or tips?
Anne-Marie says
Sounds like they started separating during the cool down. Maybe your room was warmer than mine =) Toss ’em in the fridge after making and YES, you can remelt them so scoop ’em out and remelt, and that should solve the problem =)
Nublu says
In my massage candles some kind of oil rose to the surface when they were hardened. Can you help me about this?
Anne-Marie says
Some sort of oil? What was your recipe?
Nublu says
Can i use fragrance oils which are safe to use in soaps? Or i have to add essential oil only?
Anne-Marie says
Definitely use skin safe fragrance oils =) It’s a great idea to check though. Better safe than sorry =)

So glad Soap-Queen TV is back! Loved this video on massage candles…I have to admit I was intimidated because of the candle wax on skin at first but seeing the video put my fears at ease!
Can't wait to try it out myself ๐
TeresaR says
Woohoo!!! These videos the best! Not that I've mastered MP, but I've been wanting to learn more about all those other things. Thank you, Anne-Marie!!
Megan says
Thanks for the crochet project love – I'm sure you could pull off the legwarmers!
and now I need to find a few minutes so I can sit back and watch this newest episode of SQtv!
Mindi says
I've never heard of massage candles, what a cool idea! Err… I mean warm ๐ I'll have to try making some. Thanks!
Anne-Marie says
Hi Diane –
Thanks for your watching the video. I'm glad that you enjoyed the concept. Essential Oils can be used in regular wax and soy candles. Some Essential Oils should not be used in gel candles but for wax and soy, you're fine.
Kelly, You could do any other liquid oil so no need to wait for the Avo oil.
France, Yes, Saudi was a very interesting experience. I'm so happy to be home though.
SoapyLove, Many people like to use mica to color their massage candles but the mica can clog the wick and burn off noxious fumes so it's not a great idea to use micas either so meh, we get plain massage oil. That's fine with me. I'll take a massage any day, colored or uncolored!
France, Other waxes won't really spread on the skin nicely. The soy wax has a low melt point also making the wax not hot when it comes out of the container. The other waxes melt at a hotter temperature so could burn so I'd stick with soy wax only.
Mariana, Thanks! I am happy to be home too.
Doohwa, It is a fun Valentine's Day gift.
Merryn, The ingredient listing is wrong! Good catch. We'll edit the video this weekend and re-upload. Wow, we are lucky you caught that! =) Thank you!
Merryn says
Umm – the video says that you used 1 ounce of Cocoa Butter but the ingredient list says 4 ounces. Which is correct?
Anntoinette says
I hope you found out it’s just 1 oz cause I made it with 4 and messed up badly.
Amber with Bramble Berry says
Hi Anntoinette, The video and the ingredient list were updated 2 years ago as soon as we noticed the typo. I’m curious, where did you get your recipe since the video and recipe above are correct? I’d like to know if it was reprinted somewhere else. Thanks for your help!
Doohwa says
Finally!!!hehe
I've been waiting for Soap Queen TV to come back!!
And It's massage candle this time.
Actually, I never heard it before.
I am so excited. I wnat to try making it so bad and actually use it.
It will make a great(kinda kinki) valentine's day gift.
Now I'm wondering if I could use this kind of method to make waxing candle….hm…
Mariana says

France says
ooh, meant to ask… any other waxes we can substitute? I have beeswax, candelila, carnauba… or do they not work in that kind of project being they are not candle waxes?
Thanks. Sorry for hogging the comment board ๐ (I deleted the first second post I made b/se I asked a "dumb" question, cos I wasn't paying attention in class. We can only use "skin safe" waxes and I was asking about palm candle wax, so now I know! LOL! but would still like to know about other skin safe waxes. Thanks!!)
Soapylove says
Great video! I chuckled about using color in the candle. You're so right!
And of course I always love the outtake clips at the end. ๐
France says
What an amazing idea! When I saw the title I thought "ewww, won't it be waxy?"… hehehe, little did I know! That's a wonderful idea.
What an amazing experience Saudi seems to have been too!! Yay, glad you're back.
Kelly Taylor says

I've heard of massage candles, but this is the first time I've seen them! Thank you for doing this one… it's a romantic Valentine's Day gift!
I also watched the Holiday candle video this morning and you mentioned some FOs were not for mixing with fire (am I recalling correctly?) so is the same true with EOs? or Fixed Oils for a massage candle?
