Let’s get started…
Materials
2 tsp. coconut oil
2 1/4 tsp. beeswax (or candellila wax)
2 1/8 tsp. sweet almond oil
2/3 tsp. olive oil
2 tsp. coconut oil
2 1/4 tsp. beeswax (or candellila wax)
2 1/8 tsp. sweet almond oil
2/3 tsp. olive oil
*small containers are available at www.brambleberry.com or for you Bellingham locals, www.otionsoap.com
Directions
1. Pour a couple inches of water into a shallow saucepan. Place a heat-resistant glass measuring cup (such as Pyrex) in the saucepan and heat over medium heat. Add the coconut oil and beeswax together in the measuring cup; melt each. It should take two to six minutes for both to melt completely.2. In the microwave, heat olive oil until luke warm (cold olive oil will harden the beeswax).
3. Combine melted coconut oil and beeswax with warmed olive oil. Add sweet almond oil and mix well.
4. Pour mixture into small containers. Let harden. Yields 5-7 pots of lip balm
*Optional: To make a sweet lip balm, mix 1/16 tsp. of honey with other ingredients. Since honey is not soluble in oil or wax, make sure to stir until mixed well

You mentioned that stevia is tricky to use as a sweetener. Why is that? Would honey work in order to keep it natural?
Becky with Bramble Berry says
Good morning, Kristi!
We didn’t use honey in this recipe because it tends to be a bit odd in product and instead of just being a sweetener it would leave your lips feeling sticky. Stevia doesn’t have that same property and really helps to sweeten your lip balms without having that sticky feeling. I hope this helps! ๐

Just wondering, Can I use sunflower oil or canola oil instead of sweet almond oil in the lip balm recipe?
Becky with Bramble Berry says
Good morning, Vontella!
If you are trying out this recipe and wanted to use an alternative oil to the Sweet Almond, I’d suggest going with the Sunflower Oil, or even Avocado Oil. ๐

Thanks for your help! I think I will use the sunflower oil, I already have it.

Can’t wait to hear how it turns out! ๐

I am curious as to how many oz. this recipe for lip balm makes? Just trying to figure out what size containers to buy with it yielding 5-7 pots.
Thanks.
Becky with Bramble Berry says
Hi Angela!
This recipe will make about 7 teaspoons of product which would be about 1.2 ounces. It would fill about 5 of the Daisy Lip Butter Pots or 6 of the Heart Lip Butter Pots.
I hope this helps!

I’ve never been very “crafty” but have been trying my hand at more homemade projects these days and I’m having so much fun. I really want to make soap. But I thought I’d start with some other, easier, safer products first and then work my way up to soap!
I made my first ever batch of lip balm today. I made it the very basic way, only adding then cucumber melon flavoring oil and it worked out perfectly!
Now I want to add shine and color!!!
Thank you so much for your website! It’s wonderful for crafty-wannabees like me! I can’t wait to give these to people!
Becky with Bramble Berry says
Congrats on your first batch of lip balm! We are so happy to hear that it turned out so well for you. We’d love to see how they turned out and you can share pictures on Bramble Berry’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BrambleBerry

Hi! I love your DIY lip balm and would like to use it as a do-it yourself favour for a bridal shower I’m planning. Was wondering, if having the wax and oils sit in fondue pots would work, or if there is a better way to do this?
Thanks!
Anne-Marie says
I wonder if the fondue pots get/stay hot enough? Wax has a very high melting point. Maybe a crock pot would work better?
Amanda says
Hi! I came across your page and You-Tube page. Wow! Great job! I am interested and so excited to start making soaps but I don’t know where to start. Do you have some sort f starter kit? Thanks!
Anne-Marie says
It depends what type of soap you’re wanting to get started on but I wrote this blog for newbies: http://www.soapqueen.com/bramble-berry-news/im-new-now-what/ and it should hopefully help. Lots of starter kits here: https://www.brambleberry.com/Soap-Kits-C127.aspx and the top icons on the page (Melt and Pour, Cold Process) all have additional helpful links. Let me know what other questions you have though; I’m here to help! Oh! And Facebook page (lots of questions get answered there) is here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bramble-Berry/100412115503 and http://www.TeachSoap.Com/forum has a very friendly helpful soap forum. Welcome to soaping!

Shelf life is at least a year or more. All the oils in it are incredibly long shelf life oils. No, you do not need a preservative but if you wanted a little Vitamin E (a little bit – like .5%) to help extend the shelf life of the balm, that would be fantastic as a healing oil AND help extend the shelf life of the balm.
Sandra says
What is the shelf life of this product? Do I need to add any preservatives or anything?
Anne-Marie says
The same as cooking oil in the supermmarket – you can do plain, pomace or extra virgin. I personally like the pomace =)
Anonymous says
Hi.I love your site.Just want to ask is the olive oil the same as the cooking olive oils you buy from supermarkets? like pure olive oil or extra virgin olive oils? thanks
Darcy M. says
Thanks Anne-Marie! I will be placing an order soon!
Anne-Marie says
You can use Root Beer Flavor oil from Bramble Berry by itself. Or you can add the Lip Smackin' Sweetener so that the flavor actually 'tastes' like something rather than just smells. Definitely an either/or combo =)
Darcy M. says
Thanks Anne-Marie. So I guess I'm still confused. Sorry. ๐ If I used the root beer flavor, would I need to add another flavor to it(the lip smackin or stevia) or could I just use the root beer flavor by itself?
Anne-Marie says
You could use either one, but I like the Lip Smackin' Sweetener the best.
Darcy M. says
So, if I used the root beer flavor oil from brambleberry, would I want to add the lip smacking flavor oil or stevia with it?
Anne-Marie says
I start with 3 mls and go up from there. Flavor usage rates range from .5% to 3% so check with your vendor on what the usage rate suggestion they have for you. Also, remember, a lip smackin' sweetner is what you really need to make the flavor 'taste' since the flavor is really a lip safe fragrance. You can use bleached stevia (tricky to use but all natural) or this one (liquid, easy to use): https://www.brambleberry.com/Lip-Smacking-Sweet-Flavor-Oil-P4679.aspx
Darcy M. says
Hi Anne-Marie!
How much flavor would I add to this recipe?
Anne-Marie says
Anon-
Thanks for catching the typo. The correct recipe is 2 1/8 tsp of Sweet Almond Oil. However, either recipe will work. Using 1 1/8 tsp of Sweet Almond Oil make your lip balm a little bit harder.
Anonymous says
I would love to make this, but I noticed in the magazine recipe it says 2 1/8 tsp sweet almond oil and on the blog it says 1 1/8 tsp. could you please tell me which one it correct. THANKS ๐
Anne-Marie says
Yes, you can definitely sub RBO or Apricot Oil for the Sweet Almond oil in this recipe =) The RBO might be a little lighter than the Apricot so I'd do the Apricot if I had a choice.
Val says
Hi, can you substitute Rice Bran or Apricot Oil for Sweet Almond? Or something else? I don't have Sweet Almond, and want to try this out.
Anne-Marie says
Nothing yet but that would be a fun one to tackle for sure =)
milly2u says
I want to try this one now..thanks Anne Marie. Do you have a tutorial for lip gloss in roller bottles too?
Anne-Marie says
Yes, this recipe is hard enough to go into lip balm tubes =) Let me know what you think of it when you make it.
edigo says
Hi, is this recipe hard enough to mold into lip balm tubes ?
Anne-Marie says
Hi Cassandra –
There usually isn't any 'taste' to the lip balm flavors – more of a smell as you trick your mouth into believing that it is tasting something because it smells it.
If you'd like the flavor to 'taste' you'll want a sweetener like Stevia or our soon-to-arrive liquid sweetener. That way, your lips will taste the sweet at the same time your senses smell the flavor/lip safe fragrance and trick you both into thinking the balm has some taste =)
Cassandra says
Thanks for the recipe! I just tried this tonight (my first ever attempt at lip balm!) and it worked fine, although I let it sit in the pyrex too long and had to reheat it to pour it into the tubes. However, I tried to add some of the strawberry flavor from your site and it didn't come out very strong. I think I put about 25 drops in and you can barely taste or smell it. I'm guessing that was plenty, but I wonder what I did wrong?!? Or does this combination not lend itself to flavor oils? Thanks for all the inspiration, and I L-O-V-E your website. ๐

Woohoo, A-M! It’s a terrific magazine; so glad BB got a full project page!
I have a question:
I have pure beeswax sticks so how can I find out how much would be 2.25 tsp of it? Do you have an ounce equivalent? Thank you!

Congrats. to another notch in your belt! You deserve it!
