Well, either way, it’s a woodpecker. *grin*
Downies, which ranges across most of the States without variation, have more white on the face (they come to our feeders daily, so we know them pretty well). We couldn’t see perfectly clearly from your video, but it appeared to us like your bird has a dark and reddish head, which is more like the red-breasted sapsucker. (I’m using our National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, 3rd edition, here for reference).

My Mother (a avid birdwatcher) thinks it was a downy woodpecker. Thankfully, I have minutes more of video to pore over to resolve this controversial question. =)

Thanks for the links. We’re so happy to have the birds (and not have the woodpecker snacking on our house like poor Carmen!). We just ave to keep feeding them so they survive in our cold and snowy weather we’re having here.

I had a woodpecker snacking on my house a while back. It was pretty wild to be inside and hear him start pecking – very loud. He did some considerable damage in the short time between his arrival and us replacing the wood he was munching up. He was cute but we don’t miss him at all!

If you haven’t found any good links yet, I like the one from Cornell Bird Lab: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Red-breasted_Sapsucker_dtl.html 🙂

Teresa is right. That cute bird is a sapsucker which is a type of woodpecker. One of the coolest things they do is circling tree branches.I don’t know if I described that too well but if you see it you’ll recognize it. They are one of the few birds that are able to travel on a branch upside down.
BTW-I just love your blog.I’m a subscriber and I read everything you post.
Happy Holidays To You and Yours!

A sapsucker? Cool! I’ll google that and learn more about the cute little guy. He/she certainly was a friendly little burst of color against our snowy backdrop.

Ds#1 thinks it might be a sapsucker (red-breasted sapsuckers are found on the West Coast)…how cool! We have the yellow-bellied sapsuckers here in IN. 🙂
