Ever since we created the formula for Rainbow Bubbling Bath Truffles, we can’t stop putting new spins on it. Our first recreation was the Mermaid Bubbling Bath Truffles, complete with an aquatic color scheme and tropical scent. Now we are looking to the holidays with the latest iteration – Salted Caramel Bath Truffles.

Scented with delicious Burnt Sugar Fragrance Oil, these bath truffles smell good enough to eat. Epsom salt is sprinkled on top to give texture, but it’s also a skin-loving bath additive. Cocoa butter and shea butter add plenty of moisture to the bath. Polysorbate 80 helps emulsify the butters and bath water to prevent large pools of oil in the tub.

In the water, the formula creates a slow fizzing reaction and with small, creamy bubbles. If you want more bubbles, place the bar directly under the running faucet while breaking it into small pieces.

Burnt Sugar Fragrance Oil does discolor to a deep tan. Discoloration in bath bombs is tricky; sometimes the discoloration happens and sometimes it doesn’t. We have found that in general, the discoloration takes about a week to show up. We made these bath bombs about two weeks ago, so they may continue to discolor. We chose this color scheme on purpose – if the bars do turn more brown, they’ll still look like rich caramel.

UPDATE: Below are the bath truffles after about 1.5 months. As you can see, the white layer has turned tan. It took quite a while for the discoloration to occur, but that could vary batch to batch. If you don’t plan on using these bath truffles within about a month, there are a few vanilla discoloration workarounds for this project.

• You can choose a different, non-discoloring fragrance oil. A great option would be Pure Honey Fragrance Oil – it has sweet, foodie notes and no discoloration.
• Only add the Burnt Sugar Fragrance Oil to the tan half of the bath truffle mixture.
• Add more Bronze Mica. If the tan-colored half of the mixture is darker, the contrast may pop a little more. Just keep in mind more color will also be in the bath water.

What You Need:
25 oz. Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) (41%)
7 oz. Citric Acid (12%)
13 oz. SLSA (21%)
2.5 oz. Cream of Tartar (4%)
6 oz. Shea Butter (10%)
4.5 oz. Cocoa Butter Pastilles (7%)
1.5 oz. Liquid Glycerin (3%)
0.5 oz. Polysorbate 80 (1%)
0.5 oz. Burnt Sugar Fragrance Oil (1%)
3/4 tsp. Bronze Mica
Extra Fine Epsom Salt

ONE: In a small heat-safe container, add the shea butter and cocoa butter cubes. Place the container in the microwave and melt the butters using 30-60 bursts. The cocoa butter takes a little while to melt. Be careful when removing it from the microwave, as it may be very hot.

TWO: Add the Burnt Sugar Fragrance Oil, polysorbate 80, and glycerin to the melted butters. Use a spoon to thoroughly incorporate. Set aside.

THREE: Place a fine mesh sifter over a large container. Add the baking soda, citric acid, and cream of tartar. Pour the ingredients through the sifter to get rid of chunks. Use a whisk to mix the ingredients together. Very carefully, add the SLSA to the large container (do not put it through the sifter). I recommend adding the SLSA very last because it’s extremely fine and powdery and can become airborne very easily. You may want to wear a mask during this step to avoid breathing in any SLSA. It is irritating if you breathe it in. Once everything’s added, slowly mix together the dry ingredients.

FOUR: When the liquid ingredients are about 180 ° F, add 1/3 to the dry ingredients. This is quite hot, so gloves are recommended. The hotter the liquid ingredients are when added, the softer the final “dough” will be. Adding the liquid when it’s hot reduces the need to microwave it later. Use your hands to incorporate the liquid and powder ingredients together. If you prefer, you could also use a stand or hand mixer for this step, but we prefer using our hands.

FIVE: Continue adding the liquid ingredients in 1/3 increments to the dry and mix together until fully incorporated. The final texture will be very similar to bread dough – soft, workable, and slightly sticky. The texture of the mixture depends on the temperature of the butters. The warmer the dough, the softer it will be. We found a dough temperature of about 85-100 ° F is a great moldable texture. If your dough is cooler than that, place the entire mixture into the microwave for 10-20 seconds to warm it.

SIX: You will have about 60 ounces of mixture. Split the batch into two equal containers. You can eyeball it, or weigh it depending on your preference.

SEVEN: To one container, add 3/4 teaspoon of Bronze Mica and use your hands to thoroughly mix in the colorant into the dough. If you’d like a darker color you can add more mica, just keep in mind this may leave behind more color in the bathtub.

EIGHT: Once the mica is thoroughly mixed and there are no streaks of color, lay down a sheet of wax paper on the counter and sprinkle on a thin layer of baking soda. This prevents the bath truffles from sticking to the counter, and is used to roll up the batch.

Lay the brown mixture on the wax paper, and begin forming it into a rectangle shape. Place the white mixture on top, and use your hands to spread it evenly onto the brown. Create a flat rectangle shape – about 14 inches long by about 7-8 inches tall.

NINE: Use the wax paper to roll the bubble bars. The bars may stick to the paper slightly, but that’s okay. You can use your hands to smooth out the roll if necessary.

TEN: Continue rolling, and use your hands to help create a smooth, even log.

ELEVEN: Once you’re happy with the shape, sprinkle the top with Epsom salt and press it gently into the log to help it stick.

TWELVE: Use a sharp non-serrated knife to cut the log into bars. If the log is extremely soft, it can be a little sticky and needs to be handled very carefully. You can wait for about 30 minutes for it to harden slightly, or cut the bars very gently. How soft the log is will depend on how hot the butters were when mixed in, and if you placed the mixture in the microwave.

THIRTEEN: Once the bars are cut, place them gently on a piece of parchment paper or wax paper. Use your hands to give them a more uniform shape, smooth the edges, or fix any chunks that may have fallen off while cutting. Sprinkle more salt on top if you’d like. As the butters in the bath truffles cool, they become hard. It takes about 3-4 hours for the bars to become firm depending on your room temperature. It can be hard to wait, but be patient!

Once you’re ready to use the bath truffles, place them in the tub for a slow fizzing reaction with a small amount of foamy bubbles. If you want to “activate” more bubbles, hold the bar directly under the running bath faucet while breaking off small amounts of the bar.

What You’ll Need:
1.5 oz. Avocado Butter

ONE: In a large heat safe container, add 10 oz. brown sugar and 10 oz. white sugar. Make sure there is enough room in the bowl for the added oil, and for mixing.

TWO: In a small heat safe container, melt 1.5 oz. avocado butter on 5 second bursts. Stir between each burst.

THREE: Add 3.5 oz. of potassium cocoate to a separate heat safe container. Pour in the melted avocado butter and mix well. Potassium cocoate is a super foaming, all natural liquid soap base that helps to bind all the ingredients in this recipe together while cleansing the skin gently.
FOUR: Add 7 mL of Optiphen and .8 oz. of Burnt Sugar Fragrance Oil to the oil mixture. Mix to fully incorporate.
Note: Although this scrub doesn’t contain water, it will likely get water splashed in it during use. The extra water may cause bacteria and mold to grow. We added a preservative to be extra careful but the preservative is optional. You can read more in the Talk It Out Tuesday: Preservatives post.

FIVE: Pour the oil mixture into the sugar and mix well.
SIX: Add 2.5 tsp. of Copper Sparkle Mica and 2 tsp. King’s Gold Mica. Stir until the colorants are fully incorporated.

SEVEN: Pour the scrub equally into the three jars and allow them to fully cool. Enjoy by scrubbing those rough elbows and knees in the shower or use it as an all-over-body scrub to reveal fresh new skin. If you want to make this into a facial scrub, mix it with your favorite liquid soap or lotion in a 1:1 ratio, scrub well and, for extra moisture? Leave on your face for a full 10 minutes to let the oils do their job conditioning your skin.

For those who don’t already know, I love tea. I always have my mug with me wherever I go. And while I try to stay away from sugar as much as possible, there’s one drink I have a hard time resisting anytime I’m out for Thai food – Thai tea! It is made from black tea and often flavored with spices like star anise and tamarind. It is then topped with a creamy element, like coconut milk, half and half or sweetened condensed milk. Learn how to make it in this Thai Tea Recipe by the White On Rice Couple.

Thai tea looks as great as it tastes. The cream served over the tea creates a gorgeous layered look. That was the inspiration for the Thai Tea Melt and Pour Bars Tutorial. A melt and pour swirl technique is used to mimic the cream poured into the tea, which gets its signature bronzey-orange color from the Shimmer Copper Sparkle Color Block, the Tangerine Wow! Color Block and the Perfect Red Color Block. For a realistic Thai tea smell, Black Tea Fragrance Oil, Burnt Sugar Fragrance Oil and Coconut Cream Fragrance Oil are added. It’s a perfect way to enjoy Thai tea guilt free.

What You’ll Need:

Because you are melting such a large amount of soap, you can microwave for about 1 minute at first, then stir and use 30 second bursts stirring in between to slowly melt without burning. Learn more about burnt melt and pour and how to prevent it here. Once the melt and pour is melted, add shavings of the Tangerine Wow! Color Block, Shimmer Copper Sparkle Mica and Perfect Red Color Block and stir to combine. You want the color to be a bronzey-orange hue. To achieve the color shown here, the ratio was about 4 parts Shimmer Copper Sparkle Mica, 2 parts Tangerine Wow! Color Block and 1 part Perfect Red Color Block. Keep adding the shavings until you’re happy with the color.

TWO: Add the Burnt Sugar Fragrance Oil, Black Tea Fragrance Oil and Coconut Cream Fragrance Oil. Then, add the Vanilla Color Stabilizer and stir to thoroughly combine. The Vanilla Color Stabilizer will help prevent the fragrances from turning the soap brown. Read more about vanilla discoloration here. If the soap begins to harden, pop it back into the microwave for 20 seconds.

THREE: Chop and melt 10 oz. of the White Melt and Pour Base in the microwave using 20 second bursts. Once fully melted, check the temperature of the orange-brown soap. Temperature is key to swirling! You want the orange-brown soap to about about 125 ° F, and the white soap to be about 120 °F. The white soap should be cooler than the orange-brown soap to ensure it makes a swirl in the soap without the colors being muddled.

FOUR: Once the temperatures of the soap are within range, pour the orange-brown soap into the mold. Quickly pour the white soap into the orange-brown soap. Holding the container of white soap several inches above while pouring helps it to break through into the orange-brown soap.

FIVE: Continue to pour down the length of the mold until all the white soap has been used. You may find that the white soap starts to cool while pouring. That’s okay, just work quickly!

SIX: Spritz the top of the soap with 99% isopropyl alcohol to get rid of any bubbles. Allow the soap to fully cool for about 2-4 hours until completely cool and hard. Thai Tea Melt and Pour Bars Tutorial

These Thai Tea Melt and Pour Bars feature a gorgeous swirl reminiscent of freshly poured cream.

• Tall 12″ Silicone Loaf Mold
• 45 oz. Clear Melt and Pour Base
• 10 oz. White Melt and Pour Base
• 10 mL Black Tea Fragrance Oil
• 6 mL Burnt Sugar Fragrance Oil
• 3 mL Coconut Cream Fragrance Oil
• 19 mL .6 oz Vanilla Color Stabilizer
• Shimmer Copper Sparkle Color Block
• Tangerine Wow! Color Block
• Perfect Red Color Block
• Optional: 99% Isopropyl Alcohol

Instructions

Easy to make, this is a great project for beginning crafters. Simply heat the lotion base, and add fragrance and colorant. Mixing the micas with the fragrance oil helps break up any clumps, and allows the colorant to blend into the lotion smoothly.  ONE: Disinfect a clean spoon and heat safe container by spritzing 99% rubbing alcohol on the surface and allowing it to air dry. Wear gloves throughout the whole process to avoid contaminating the lotion.

TWO:  Scoop the Aloe Lotion into the disinfected container, and heat in the microwave in 10 second bursts, stirring between each heating burst. Be very careful to not heat the lotion above 130°F, or the preservative can become ineffective. The lotion should become slightly more liquid and pourable.
THREE: In a separate container, measure out 4.5ml (about 0.15 oz) of Burnt Sugar Fragrance Oil. Add 1/8 tsp Cappuccino Mica, and 1 tsp Lip Safe Copper Shimmer Mica to the fragrance oil, and stir well. 
FOUR: Add the colored fragrance oil to the warm lotion, and stir to combine.
FOUR: Carefully pour the lotion into 2 oz bottles, to just at the shoulder of the bottle. Allow the lotion to cool without a lid for 2 hours before capping and enjoy!

Burnt Sugar Shimmer Lotion

This lotion gives skin hydration, along with a soft shimmer.

Ingredients

• 16 oz. Aloe Lotion

• Carefully pour the lotion into 2 oz bottles, to just at the shoulder of the bottle. Allow the lotion to cool without a lid for 2 hours before capping and enjoy!
