You can use almost any small glass container to make these Beeswax & Honey Candles. That includes food jars, Mason jars, or empty candle containers. Just save any that look like the perfect size and give them a thorough wash. It’s a great way to reuse glass containers and candles are a perfect gift.

All you need from there is beeswax, wicks, and Pure Honey Fragrance Oil. The notes of honey, rose, and peach tea are the perfect complement to the natural smoky smell of beeswax. The wood wicks give the candles a rustic look and a comforting crackling sound as they burn.

Beeswax is a hard, dense wax that has a high melting point. It needs a large flame to create an even burn pool. We recommend making these candles in containers that have a diameter of about 3″ or less. In our tests, the wide wood wicks worked well for containers with a diameter of about 2.5″ and smaller. Other large wicks, like the Wu-250 Brown Cotton Candle Wicks or the Cd-20 Wicks, also work well. 

The amount of beeswax and fragrance you need for this project will depend on the size and quantity of your containers. To estimate how much wax you need, put your containers on a scale and fill them with water. Add up the total weight of the water – that will give you a rough estimate of how much wax to melt. Then, use the Fragrance Calculator to find out how much scent to use. We recommend using the strong recommendation so the scent fills the room.

The hardest part of this project is probably the cleanup. Beeswax can be a pain to clean off bowls, containers, and mixing utensils. If possible, have a bowl and mixing tool that’s just for wax. If that’s not an option, the easiest way to clean bowls is while the wax is still warm – wipe off as much as possible with a paper towel before washing it with very hot water and strong dish soap.

What You Need:

TWO: Weigh how much beeswax you need to fill your containers. To estimate how much wax you need, put your containers on a scale and fill them with water. Add up the total weight of the water – that will give you a rough estimate of how much wax to melt.

THREE: Melt the wax slowly. Don’t allow it to exceed about 170° F, or it can start to lose its aroma.

FOUR: Once the wax is completely melted, turn off the double boiler and remove the smaller container of wax. Add the Pure Honey Fragrance Oil and stir in thoroughly.
NOTE: Pure Honey Fragrance Oil has a flashpoint of 200° F+. In general, it’s recommended that fragrance is poured into wax that has cooled below the flashpoint of the fragrance oil. We poured in the fragrance when the wax was around 150° F. 

FIVE: Carefully pour the wax into each container. We transferred it to an Easy Pour Mixing and Measuring Container to help.
TIP: Pouring the wax into the container with the wick already placed in the candle helps ensure you don’t pour too much and cover the top of the wick. Once the wax is poured, the wick can be moved and centered.

SIX: Allow the candles to fully cool and harden. If there are a few air bubbles or imperfections on the top of your candle, use a heat gun to carefully melt the top layer and allow it to cool again.
NOTE: We found the wood wicks eventually begin to burn slightly with a lot of high heat from the gun. 

SEVEN: Allow the candles to fully cool and harden. Light the wick and enjoy!

The most common candle making question I receive is, “can I add soapmaking fragrance oils to my candle?” After all, the most important property of a candle is the scent. The short answer is yes! All fragrance oils and essential oils at Bramble Berry can be used in your candle project. The small caveat is these fragrances were tested specifically for soap, and were not tested in candles. The scent may change once the candle is burned, or may not give off the best scent throw.

Soapmaking fragrance oils can be added to candle projects, but they may not have been tested for scent throw. 

When using a new fragrance for candles, I strongly recommend making a small test candle first. From our tests, we know that Pineapple Cilantro and Pink Grapefruit Fragrance Oils don’t smell very good in candles. In addition to the scent changing when burned, sometimes fragrance oil can separate once the candle has cooled. It’s important to always thoroughly mix in the fragrance oil into the melted wax. And if your fragrance starts to separate, do not burn the candle. This can be dangerous, as you don’t know how the fragrance oil will behave when introduced to direct flame. If you’re making a gel candle, there are a few fragrance oils we do not recommend because of their low flashpoint. You can find that list here.

Flavor oils are fragrance oils which are safe for the lips. These fragrances are also safe to use in candles, but have not been tested and the scent may change when the candle is lit. On the flip side, if you buy a candle fragrance oil, it may not be suitable for soap or other products applied to the skin. Candle only fragrance oils are held to different (lower) standards of safety because they are not used on the body.

If you want a tried-and-true fragrance for your candle project, the Skin Safe Candle Fragrances are the way to go. These fragrances can be used in both soap and candles, but were specifically formulated to have a great scent throw. The term “scent throw” refers to the intensity of scent candles emit once lit. For a medium to strong scent, I recommend using 0.8 oz. – 1.2 oz. of fragrance oil per pound of wax into your project. If your fragrance oil features especially strong notes, you may find 0.5 oz. fragrance oil per pound is suitable for your project. You can use the Fragrance Calculator to find out how much scent to add as well.

Several other factors affect the scent throw of your candle, including what type of wax you’re using. Some of my favorite waxes for candle making include EcoSoya Advanced Soy Wax and EcoSoya 135 Wax for container candles, and EcoSoya Pillar Blend Wax for pillar candles and tarts. Yellow beeswax is wonderful if you want to add a natural, smoky scent. I used yellow beeswax and Pure Honey Fragrance Oil in a candle and it may be one of my favorite combinations ever! The smell was wonderful.

The size of wick also affects scent throw. If the wick does not create a large enough burn pool, it may inhibit the scent throw. The chart below is helpful for finding the right wick for your project. Another important step is allowing the candle to cure. Over time, the scent in candles actually improves as the fragrance and wax bind together. Cure time will vary depending on the crafter, but I like to give my projects at least 3-4 days to cure. This post has more candle tips and tricks.

Last but not least, it’s important to consider temperature. Some candle makers find adding a fragrance oil with a low flashpoint to hot wax causes some of the fragrance to “burn off.” In general, fragrance oil should be added to most waxes once they have cooled to about 150 ° F or below. This will vary slightly depending on the wax and fragrance being used.

Making your own wedding favors can seem a little daunting, especially if you’re having a large wedding. My biggest piece of advice is to give yourself plenty of time. Crafting at the last second can be stressful. I also recommend choosing a project that suits your skill level. Wedding favors may not be the best time to try an advanced project if you’re a beginner. =)

Candles are a great favor option. They are relatively quick and easy to make, and who doesn’t love a candle? For this tutorial, I made five candles featuring two different color and scent combinations. One candle is scented with Sweet Pea Fragrance Oil and colored a light pink for a feminine option. The other is uncolored and scented with Tobacco and Bay Leaf Fragrance Oil.

The recipe and tutorial below makes ten candles total. If you need to make a lot more, you may consider melting your wax in a large sauce pot over medium-low heat. This way, you can use a larger container than what may fit in your microwave. Then, use a ladle or smaller container to pour the hot wax into each candle container to cool and harden. I recommend pouring the wax on a counter space where the candles can cool and harden without moving them. Once the hot wax is in the container, moving the candles can be tricky!

What You’ll Need:
10 Candle Tins
40 oz. EcoSoya Advanced Soy Wax
10 WU-250 Brown Cotton Candle Wicks
1.6 oz. Tobacco and Bay Leaf Fragrance Oil
1.6 oz. Sweet Pea Fragrance Oil
Red Wax Dye Block

ONE: Melt down 40 oz. of EcoSoya Advanced Soy Wax in the microwave using a heat safe container. You can also melt the wax in a saucepan on the stove over medium-low heat. Once melted, add a few drops of wax into the bottom of each candle tin, and place the wick into the center of the candle. Cover the top of the wick with more wax to steady the wick to the bottom of the container.

TWO: Split the wax into two containers, each will weigh about 20 ounces. To one batch, add 1.6 ounces of the Tobacco and Bay Leaf Fragrance Oil. Stir thoroughly.

THREE: To the other container, add 1.6 ounces of Sweet Pea Fragrance Oil and use a spoon to thoroughly mix in. Then, shave a very small amount of the Red Wax Dye Block using a cheese grater. Add the shavings to the melted wax and stir. The heat from the melted wax will melt and Red Wax Dye Block and give the wax a light red color. As the wax cools and hardens, it will lighten to pink. You can test the color by dropping the wax on a white piece of paper and allowing it to cool. Add more dye block shavings if you’d like a richer color.

FOUR: Allow the wax containers to cool slightly. Cut 10 straws in half and slide the wicks into the straws. This will help steady the wicks in the center of the jar after the wax is poured. 

FIVE: Allow the melted wax to cool to about 110 ° F or cooler. The cooler the wax is, the less likely it will be to melt the wax holding the wick in place. Then, pour the red wax into half of the candle tins, and the uncolored wax into the other half. Allow to thoroughly cool and harden. 

When the candle is cool, trim the wicks and allow the candle to cure for 48 hours. This allows the fragrance to set up properly. Enjoy!

Beeswax is an amazing option for handmade candles. Not only is it natural, but beeswax smells amazing. These Pure Honey Beeswax Candles are made with the sweet and delicious Pure Honey Fragrance Oil. The combination of the fragrance and yellow beeswax creates an incredibly warm and comforting scent. We test a lot of candles here at the Bramble Berry office, and these candles wowed everyone! Just make sure to put them on a plate or other surface to catch the melting wax.

The rustic shape of these candles was created by recycling used milk cartons. Depending on the size of your container, you may need to use a different amount of wax to fill it. Just make sure the container is watertight and won’t melt from the high temperatures of the melted beeswax. You want the wick to be taller than the carton so you can center the wick with a straw or pencils. Mark where you want your wick to be and cut off the top of the carton with scissors.

CHOOSING YOUR WICK: The wicks you use will depend on the size of your container. The wick needs to be larger than what you would use in a soy candle. Beeswax is a hard, dense wax and has a high melting point. That means it needs a larger flame for a consistent melt down. It is also important that the wax pool isn’t so big that it drips down the side of the candle. We chose CD-20 wicks for our containers. To find the correct size for your candle, you can use this wick chart.

If you don’t have a double boiler, you can melt the beeswax in the microwave. TWO: Add 1.3 oz. of Pure Honey Fragrance Oil to the melted wax and stir well.

THREE: Put a drop of the hot wax mixture in the center of the cartons. Place the wick in the wax and hold it until the wax sets up (about 10 seconds). Then, center your wick. We used a straw with a slit cut in it to keep the wick centered, but you can also use chopsticks, pencils or dowels.

FOUR: Slowly and carefully pour the wax into your containers. Set aside, and allow to fully cool and harden. This can take 3-4 hours, or up to overnight.

FIVE: Peel the cartons away from the candles slowly. If there uneven parts, clean them off with a clean up tool.



SIX: Light the candle and enjoy the warm scent! We recommend placing your candle on a heat safe surface in case any wax drips down the side. And of course, never leave the candle unattended =)

While candles are prominent in the fall and winter, when the correct fragrance is used candles are equally as enjoyable during summer. Using Orange Blossom Fragrance Oil, this candle project is perfect for adding fragrance and color to your home.

Need some tips for candle making? Below, I answer many common candle making questions. Covering everything from wick selection to frosting, your next candle project will be a breeze.

What You’ll Need:
16 oz. EcoSoya Advanced Soy Wax
Teal Wax Dye Block
Orange Wax Dye Block
Cd-16 Wicks (2 wicks)
.4 oz Orange Blossom (Candle and Soap) Fragrance Oil
8 oz Glass Bail Jars (discontinued)
Note: The Glass Bail Jars used in this tutorial have been discontinued. The kit now includes two Tapered Neck Candle Jars.

TWO: Melt 16 ounces of EcoSoya Advanced Soy Wax in the microwave on 30 second bursts. Once thoroughly melted, pour 8 ounces of wax into a separate container.

THREE: Add shavings of the Teal Wax Dye Block to one container of melted wax, and shavings of the Orange Wax Dye Block to the other container. Use a spoon to thoroughly mix the color. To test the color before pouring, use the “Frozen Spoon Trick.”

FOUR: Once you are happy with the colors, add .2 ounces of Orange Blossom Soap and Candle Fragrance Oil to each container. Stir to combine.
FIVE: Carefully pour 2 ounces of the blue wax into each 8 ounce bail jar. Place wick in the center, and use chopsticks, pencils or dowels to hold the wicks in place while the wax hardens.
SIX: Once the blue layer has cooled and hardened, pour 4 ounces of the orange wax into each glass bail jars. Pour the orange wax around 90 degrees to avoid it from melting the blue layer. At this point the orange wax may have cooled. Feel free to put it back into the microwave using 20 second bursts. Allow the orange layer to fully cool and harden.
Note: Dry time will vary depending on room temperature, but on average will take about 2 hours. 

SEVEN: Pour the remaining blue wax evenly into each glass bail jar, about 2 ounces for each jar. Allow to fully cool and harden.
EIGHT: Trim the wicks, and allow the candle to cure for 48 hours. This allows the fragrance to set up properly. Enjoy!

Q: Help! The top of my candle isn’t nice and smooth, what do I do?
Lumpy tops, divots or bumps your candles can be caused by too slow of a cooling process. You can fix this in a couple of different ways. Try increasing (or decreasing) your pour temperature in increments of +/- 10 degrees. Adjusting your ambient temperature and increasing air flow can also help prevent problems with your candles. Another way to remedy this problem is to grab a heat gun and aim it at those trouble spots from a 3-5 inch distance.

Q: I put fragrance in my candle, and now I can’t smell it!
We always recommend allowing your candles to sit (or cure) for at least 48 hours before burning to make sure the candle sets up properly. Another thing you want to make sure of, is that you are using fragrance that is compatible with your candle wax. Typically, adding in your fragrances above 135°F is going to give your candle a good hot throw. And, Bramble Berry has recently reformulated the candle fragrance line to use in candles, soap and lotions. Now you can make perfectly matching candle, soap and lotion ensembles; some the team’s favorites are Apple Macintosh and Pumpkin Pie.

Q: How much fragrance should I use in my candles?
When making container candles, we typically recommend using your fragrance choice at 4-6% of your entire candle weight. If you would rather work with actual numbers than percentages, hop on over to to the this blog post to learn how to to convert from %s to actual numbers.

Q: What do I use to color my candles?
Micas and oxides are great for soaping projects, but they don’t work as well in candles because they can clog the wick. Because pigments are heavy, they may fall to the bottom of the candle. The best colorants to use in candles are Wax Dye Blocks. Extremely concentrated and easy to mix in, one ounce of Wax Dye Blocks can color approximately 100 pounds of wax!

Q: What wick should I use for my candle?
When choosing a wick for your candle, it may seem that there are a million choices! Here is an easy chart that will help you decide:

Q: My candles are frosting, why?
Frosting on candles can occur when using soy or vegetable waxes and appears on the tops of candles as a white film or coating. Some factors that can affect the formation of frosting on your candles are fragrance, dye, pour temperature  cooling temperature and storage temperature. If you find that your candles are frosting, try increasing or decreasing the pour temperature by 10 to 30 degrees. While the candles cool, ensure the ambient room temperature remains fairly consistent. A room temperature of about 70 degrees is recommended.

Q: My candles are pulling away from the container, why?
If you find that there are gaps between the container and wax, this often occurs because of fluctuating temperatures that cause the wax to expand or condense. This problem is sometimes referred to as “wet spots.” Unfortunately once the candle pulls away from the container, it will not adhere again. If you find your candles separate from your containers, try increasing your pour temperatures or pouring into warm containers so that the wax and containers cool down at the same rate.

What You’ll Need:

20 oz Ecosoya Advanced Soy Wax

1 oz Sunny Herb Garden Fragrance Oil

4 Candle Pot Candle Containers

10 CD-12 Wicks

1 Orange Wax Dye Block

1 Hunter Green Wax Dye Block

1 Red Wax Dye Block

1 Dropper with Suction Bulb

1 Guest Botanicals Mold

1 Clean Up Tool

ONE: Melt 20 oz. of Ecosoya Advanced wax in a microwave safe container in 30 second bursts until clear.

TWO: Pour 4 oz. (volume measurement) of melted wax into smaller container.

THREE: Shave off a small pile of Hunter Green wax dye block, and put shavings into the 4 oz. of wax. To check the color, try the spoon trick: run cold water over a metal spoon, dry off, and quickly dip the tip of the spoon in your colored wax. This should give you an idea of what the green will look like when it is hardened.

FOUR: Once you are happy with the green, use your dropper to fill just the leaf section of the Guest Botanicals mold. Don’t fill this too full! You want just the leaf itself, not the rectangle part of the mold.

Tip: Wax that cools too rapidly can get a white haze on the surface. To prevent this haze on the leaves, fill a large flat container with hot water. Gently lay your leaf mold that has the wax in it, to float in this water. This will ensure your wax doesn’t cool too quickly.

FIVE: Shave off a pile of Orange and Red wax dye blocks. We used approximately 4 times the amount of orange to red. Add this to the large batch of uncolored wax, reheating it if necessary. Again, you can check the color of this wax using a cold metal spoon. Once you have a nice terra cotta color, measure out 1 oz. of Sunny Herb Garden Fragrance Oil. Add to colored wax and stir well.

SIX: Grab your flower pot containers and wicks. Using another dropper, place one drop of terra cotta wax in the center of a flower pot. Place a wick in this puddle of wax and hold it firmly until the wax sets up (about 10 seconds). Repeat for all four pots.

SEVEN: Fill flower pots almost to the brim with terra cotta wax. Use two pencils or chopsticks to hold wicks centered in the pot. Place each pot in a warm bath of water to help them to slowly cool.

EIGHT: Check on the green leaves. If they are solid, gently press on the back of the mold to release them. You will need three leaves per flower pot, so refill the leaves again, and repeat the water bath until you have 12 leaves total.

NINE: Once you have 12 leaves and all your terra cotta pots are set up, it is time to assemble the candles. Melt the remainder of the green wax. Using a dropper, dribble a little wax on top of the candle. Use this wax like glue to arrange three leaves around the top of each candle.

TEN: Trim wick to 1/2″, and your candle is ready to use! In case of waxy leaf dribbles, place your candle on a heat-safe surface so you can easily scrape away fallen wax. Our tests didn’t leak but just in case, protecting your surface is worth the extra step.
