Shea Butter Soap Cupcakes – Cold Process soap

Hi Everyone! Please welcome Erin from Naiad Soap Arts who generously offered to help me out while Anne-Marie is away. Erin’s soap craftsmanship is mind boggling, not to mention beautiful. She created this amazing tutorial just for Soap Queen, enjoy! ~Amber

Have you been drooling over all of the cupcake themed bath and body treats lately? I have! Here is another to add to the collection – a deliciously sweet Cold Process Soap Cupcake scented with Strawberry and Cream cheese! The end result smells just like a cupcake!

If you unfamiliar with Cold Process consider this DVD or this Book. For your safety please do not try this until you are familiar with the Cold Process method of soap making and are familiar with safety precautions when handling Sodium Hydroxide. Many thanks ~ erin

Now let’s get started!

Soap recipe for 6 cupcakes:
7.5 oz. Coconut oil 76 degree
7.5 oz. Palm Oil
6.25 oz. Olive Oil Pomace
2.5 oz. Castor Oil
1.25 oz. Shea Butter
7 oz. of distilled water
3.5 oz. of Sodium Hydroxide
1 oz. Cream Cheese Frosting Fragrance Oil
1 oz. Strawberry Fragrance Oil
we will be soaping at 100 degrees
There is a little extra soap incase you want to add more frosting than I did!
If not, have a small plastic container ready for extra soap!

Other supplies:
• Round Cupcake Silicone Mold
• 6 paper cupcake liners
• Flamingo Pink High PH Lab Color
• Iridescent Glitter
• Disposable Cake Decorating bag
• Plastic Star Cake Decorating Tip or stainless steel decorating tip
• Stick Blender
• scale

• safety goggles

• gloves

• plastic spoon

• stainless steel whisk (for thorough stirring)

• one, 2 cup microwave safe glass measuring cup

• one, 4 cup microwave safe glass measuring cup

• one, 8 cup microwave safe glass measuring cup

• one, 2 cup plastic or glass cup for measuring sodium hydroxide. (I have one measuring cup I use for sodium hydroxide and nothing else and I suggest you designate a sturdy measuring cup for this task)

• thermometer(s) that reads up to 200 degrees

• box large enough to fit the mold, and at least 6 inches deep.

For all supplies without a link you can do a web search to find them and many of the cake supplies will be available in a local craft or baking store. The measuring cups can be found at any big box store that sells kitchenware.

1) Get everything out and within easy reach. Line the cupcake mold with paper liners, cut the tip of the plastic disposable decorating bag so that the plastic star tip fits in it, weigh out your 1 oz of fragrance oils and set aside ( I like to save empty fragrance oil bottles for this), double check that you have all of your supplies ready.

2) In your 8 cup measuring glass, weigh out your Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, and Shea butter. Microwave until melted about 4 minutes

3) Add your olive oil and castor oil and set aside.

4 ) PUT ON YOUR SAFETY GOGGLES AND GLOVES. They will be on from here on out. 🙂

5) In your 2 cup glass measuring glass weigh out your water, set aside. In your 2 cup glass or plastic measuring cup weigh out sodium hydroxide. VERY IMPORTANT: in a well ventilated area mix the sodium hydroxide into the water (never the other way around). Be sure not to inhale any of the fumes as they are toxic. Stir with your plastic spoon until the solution is clear and all of the sodium hydroxide is dissolved – about 2 minutes. Set aside with your thermometer and wait for the temp to reach 100 degrees. Start with ice water to expedite this part!

6) Once the sodium hydroxide is just above 100 degrees, take the temperature of your oils and make sure they are also at 100 degrees. If it is too hot pop the container in an ice water bath and if it is too cool pop in the microwave for just a few seconds at a time. NOTE: temperatures can be within 5 degrees of each other.Slowly mix the sodium hydroxide solution into the oils while mixing with the same plastic spoon you used to mix the sodium hydroxide solution. Finish off by mixing with your stick blender until you achieve a light trace (looks like thin pudding). This took me about 1 minute.

7) Separate out 18 oz. of soap into your 4 cup glass measuring cup, add 1 oz of Cream Cheese Frosting FO, stir well, pour into your cupcake mold, and tap on the counter to level out soap. Set aside.

8) To the remaining soap add your 1 oz of Strawberry FO, and 40 drops of Flamingo Pink labcolor or until you get a pink that you like. The soap should be getting pretty thick at this point. Stir with your whisk until the soap is very thick and can hold shape.

9) Fill your disposable decorating bag with the strawberry pink soap. Make sure you hold the decorating tip securely in the bottom and keep it in place until the bag is full of soap. Twist the top or secure with a twist tie.

10) Begin piping frosting onto the tops of your cupcakes in a circular motion, building up tapered layers as you go. Repeat with all six cupcake soaps. I used a small star tip to get a tight ridge on the frosting but a larger tip will make for the big fluffy frosting look you have probably seen!

11) Sprinkle with glitter when you are finished.

12) Place a box over the top of the mold, tall enough for clearance for the soap frosting. Cover with a blanket and let sit undisturbed for 24 hours. After 24 hours your cupcakes should be very firm and easily removed from the mold. You can peel the paper at this point or keep it on. Let them cure for 4 weeks in a cool, dry place!

Afternote: the Cream Cheese Frosting FO will start to darken the soap because of the vanilla in the fragrance. I think the end result is going to be a tan color and you can see that starting to happen in the photo. If you do not want this to happen choose a non-discoloring Fragrance.

Thanks for joining us again for part 2 of the interview with Lauren Miller from Sun Basil Garden Soap. If you missed the first part of the interview catch up here. Now, back to Sun Basil Garden...

Soap Queen: Your designs are flawless. How much time per week do you put into designing new soaps versus paid production time? For example, at Bramble Berry, 5% of our budget is devoted to research and development which is matched by 5% of staff time. I’m curious about how much time you spend furthering your designs.

Lauren Miller: I try and have fun with it all since soap is just down right fun. I never have a large block of time so I use every little pocket I can get and journal ideas as they come to me. And then when the time opens up – I soap! Perfection can be a big road block so even if I’m not 100% thrilled I give it a try. I would say new designs are about 30% of my time. I’m trying to think two holidays ahead so I can have designs made in time. Keeping on top of shipping and keeping supplies in stock is a big part of my focus.

Soap Queen: What’s your favorite Bramble Berry product?

Lauren Miller: Hands down your oxides! It’s the only colorant I will use. The texture and price are unbeatable. I also love Bramble Berry’s Non Bleeding Red. I cannot find that juicy, red color anywhere else nor do I care to look for it. I adore it and get nervous when I start running low.

My favorite Bramble Berry fragrance oil is Fresh Zucchini Flower– that scent is so incredibly unique and fresh.

Soap Queen: If you had another job, what would it be?

Lauren Miller: I do have another job. Full time, stay at home mom to the sweetest little boys. I worked in corporate America for 10 years before having children and I literally traded it all in and never looked back. This is the hardest job I have ever had but it continues to teach me so much about myself- how to love, patience, forgiveness, problem solving and not to take myself too seriously. And I never have trouble sleeping.

This September marks the beginning of both our boys being in school full time so I will begin a new phase of motherhood. I’m so grateful to have my little soap business waiting for me in the wings. I have plans galore and will finally have 8 hours without interruptions to see them through. I’m opening up for wholesale this September and a whole new packaging scheme just in time for holiday gift giving.

Soap Queen: You manage a great business and a family. Do you have any tips for those of us struggling with work/life balance?

Lauren Miller: Define your focus first. For me, my family is my first focus. I’m lucky to have a husband who helps me identify when work begins to take over. Boundaries are incredibly necessary. Learn to say no, even if your ego wants to say yes. When I first started soaping, I would literally stay up every night till 2 am working in the kitchen on new designs but this lead to an impatient mom the next day. I now have set hours for soaping and stick to a set bedtime during the week. Exercise and eat well. It really does help.

Soap Queen: What did I miss that you want Soap Queen readers to know?

Lauren Miller: Thank you so much for the opportunity, Anne-Marie. And I’m dreaming of getting a matching orange microwave as seen on Soap Queen TV in my new soap kitchen. I adore your company and products and continue to refer customers to you when asked how to get started.

It’s time for another Soap Queen Interview! Woohoo!

Today I’ll be sharing an interview with Lauren Miller, the owner of Sun Basil Garden SoapCompany. Her handcrafted soaps are designed to bring a smile to your face and leave your skin feeling juicy clean. Lauren takes pride in using top of the line, quality and all natural ingredients.Let’s find out a little bit more about Lauren, shall we?

Soap-Queen: Lauren, your soaps are so creative with a clean and modern look. I’ve already gushed about how much I love them. So tell us…why Soap?

Lauren Miller: I have always adored bath and beauty products. Something about the feeling and the scent just makes me feel like I’m taking care of myself. But after becoming a full time mom, bath time became my only real alone time. Ten minute showers, in those early days with toddlers, was all I could fit in. So about a year ago over breakfast, I declared I was going to start making soap- And that was it! I did a Google search and luckily found Bramble Berry. I got my first delivery and have not stopped since.

Soap is such a fascinating medium. It’s a practical way to express your creativity since everyone needs to use it. There is so little waste. If you make a mistake it’s still something you can use. I love that. Using your imagination and a few basic supplies, the possibilities are endless.

Soap-Queen: I couldn’t agree more! I like to call soapmaking a consumable art form. OK, next question: Your soap is cutting edge design; before you came on the scene, I had not seen anyone focus primarily on cut outs as their main design. How did you come up with this focus?

Lauren Miller: I love to challenge myself and began with very few supplies. I’m always thinking about using what I already have which often becomes like a game. I started pouring color boards from soap and using what I had around the house. I favor bold colors, simplicity and clean lines so the cut outs match my personal style. I discovered this inlayed process guaranteed my design to last more than one use and not rub off as more traditional molded soaps. The challenge and the practicality hooked me.

Soap-Queen: As a current customer (of Sun Basil Garden), I can attest that your designs can get truly intricate. How long do you spend on your most difficult soap?

Lauren Miller: I grew up in a creative family and learned early how to work well with my hands. I’m pretty practiced and can work fast once I’m happy with my finished product.
Now, I’m a still a full time Mom, so interruptions are coming at me constantly. But because soap needs to harden it lends it self well to pouring in stages. I often have trays of bacon and eggs drying while I‘m also making our real breakfast. I never have a long stretch of time but 10 minutes here and there lends itself well to my schedule. I once made a pizza soap that I have not repeated in awhile as it almost broke me.

Soap-Queen: You have an Etsy shop. Do you sell anywhere else? If you do, what are the pros/cons of keeping the Etsy shop in conjunction with the other sales outlets?

Lauren Miller: Right now, as a Mom, Etsy works best for me. I can spend weekends living life with my kids and husband and have control over my inventory. If I’m out of a fragrance oil, I can hold off on listing that line until I reorder and have time to recreate the soap. If school demands take off, I can put my shop on vacation. Not to mention I love the community and the worldwide audience Etsy pulls. I recently opened a shop on Art Fire and have done a few craft shows. I’m launching into wholesale this September and getting ready for the Holiday season.

Creamy Mango, Mango Lassi …

What’s in a name? Perhaps everything. Joanna over at The Soap Bar blog and the ultra fab Product Body loves our Limited Edition Mango Lassi so much she’d like to ‘drink it through a straw through her nose‘. While I’d not advise going quite that far, her enthusiasm is not misplaced. It’s a delightful fragrance which didn’t sell terribly well (much to my surprise and chagrin). Joanna believes it was my poor choice of a name. Either way now we only have it via special order (10 pounds) but we recently ordered a drum for a customer and have some left over.

I’ve put it up for sale in 1 pound sizes so you can try this fabulous fragrance and not have to get the full hefty 10 pounds (though, once you smell it, you’ll probably want to bathe in it so you’ll need 10 pounds). Realistic Citrus Soaps

1. Pull out a piece of saran wrap long enough to hold all of your citrus slices. Carefully position your “rind” soap on the saran wrap. Pull the wrap tight to make sure there are no wrinkles under the “rind”. Do the best you can – the wrap never quite gets straightened or perfect.

2. Spritz the “rind” and inside of the rind (onto the plastic wrap) with rubbing alcohol. Pour a thin layer of clear soap into the rind.

3. Spritz the thin layer of clear soap with rubbing alcohol. Place the “slices” into the clear layer of soap, before it hardens. Wiggle them into the perfect positioning. Have your paring knife handy just in case you need to slice off a too-large slice piece to ensure evenly spaced out soap.

4. Spray the entire set up with alcohol. Alcohol is your friend in this case. It helps with adhesion of the soap pieces.

5. Allow this clear layer to harden up prior to the next step. This usually takes 3 to 5 minutes at the most. If you do not allow your clear layer to harden up, the Lemon Slice below is a good example of what happens – the white soap will leak out the sides of the slice.

6. Melt White melt and pour soap in the microwave, double boiler or whatever method you prefer. Make sure the white soap is not steaming or else it will melt your slices. For the Bramble Berry House Bases , 120 to 130 degrees is the best option for the overpour.

7. Spritz with alcohol. Using either a steady hand, you can pour directly into the middle of the soap slices from your heat safe container. The Melt & Pour Injector Tool is fabulous for this because it allows precision targeting with the white soap base. Using the Injector is my preferred method for this soap. It has less mess and trimming to work with after the soap hardens.

8. Give one final spritz and you’re all done. Allow the soap to harden. Peel the soap off the plastic, cut into slices or wrap whole.

Voila – you’re done! Realistic Citrus Slices that are easy and fun to make.

Making Sushi Soap – The Rice Secret

Ingredients:

Tools:

Flexible brownie pan
Heat safe container
spoon for mixing

Directions: This the process is very similar to our Jelly Roll soap project. The first step is to make all of your parts; make a thin seaweed sheet (utilizing Flexy Fast and following the instructions here), use different colors of soap cut up into sticks, and grated white soap for the rice. To see the full tutorial on how make the Flexy Fast ‘texture sheet’ for the seaweed, click here.

To make the ‘seaweed’ the perfect texture we actually rolled out a sheet of our Flexy Fast molding putty onto a sheet of real nori. After the putty had completely hardened, we ran it under warm water and rubbed off the nori. It left behind a few scraps of seaweed – but that just added authenticity to our sushi soap! Trim down this textured sheet so that it fits perfectly in the bottom of your flexible tray mold. The actual ‘nori’ soap is three different colors of melt and pour base, each one a slightly varied green to add texture and character to the soap ‘nori’ wrap. Notice the drizzle pattern in the third photo above? Try and drizzle in alternating patterns for the different colors of green. We used Green Chrome Oxide, Patina Sheen Mica and a small, teensy amount of Heavy Metal Gold colors to get our perfect ‘nori’ color. And, of course, the fragrance oil we chose for the project is Wasabi but another good one would be Lettuce.

It’s important to have all of your components ready as soon as the ‘seaweed’ soap sheet is set-up. The fresher the soap, the easier it is to roll.

Make the ‘rice’ by grating white melt and pour soap and mixing it with a little glycerin. How much is ‘a little’? For 16 ounces of grated soap, drizzle 2 teaspoons of liquid glycerin over the soap and mix well. The glycerin is the ‘glue’ that helps to hold the sticky rice together. Make your ‘vegetables’ by pouring realistic food colored soap into sheets and cutting in circular, triangular and square strips for authenticity.

Once all the materials are ready, lay down the seaweed sheet *textured presentation-side down) and sprinkle a little grated soap along the longer edge on the inside. Next, lay strips of the various colored soaps on top of the ‘rice’ and then sprinkle a little more grated soap on top. You can sprinkle some melted soap on your ‘vegetables’ to help keep the vegetables in place. Gently but firmly, roll up the soap pressing down the shredded soap. If you wait too long after making the ‘nori’, the soap will not be as flexible and forgiving for rolling. Cut into pieces and you’re done! Buy some sushi take out boxes and wow your customers, friends and family with your authentic looking sushi soap. We’ve been using our sushi soap for over a month now and the entire thing has stayed intact perfectly!

Wedding Soap: Festive Wedding Cakes

These soapy wedding cakes are quirky and cute. You can even customize these beauties to match the real wedding cake.

What You’ll Need:
White Melt and Pour
Clear Melt and Pour
White Tea & Ginger Fragrance Oil
Light Gold Mica
Wedding Cake Mold
Injector (syringe or droppers)
Rubbing Alcohol Spritzer
Microwave Safe Bowl (Pyrex)

Step 1: Melt 4 oz of clear melt and pour soap base. Add a pinch of light gold mica (or whatever colorant you’re using) and mix together. With your injector tool (droppers will work), fill each little flower on the wedding cake mold with your colored soap. Let the flowers cool.

Tip: When using oxides, to avoid spots and speckles, mix your powdered colorant with a little rubbing alcohol before adding it to the soap base.

Step 2: Melt approximately 8-10 oz of white melt and pour soap base. Mix in ¼ oz White Tea and Ginger fragrance oi l and 1/2 tablespoon oflight gold mica (adding the mica is optional, it will give the wedding cake a slight shimmer).

Step 3: Let your soap cool to 120 degrees before pouring your second layer. Spritz the flowers with rubbing alcohol before pouring the second layer to make sure the layers will adhere. Pour your second layer and spritz again with rubbing alcohol to eliminate bubbles. Let the soaps cool for 4-6 hours before popping out of the molds.

Note: If the soap does not cool to 120 degrees, it will melt your flowers in the mold. This would be a shame since getting the flowers perfect takes a bit of effort. So make sure to control the temperature of your soap by heating in 30 second intervals in the microwave.

Hint: For the Pink Wedding Cake Soaps, use the liquid non-bleeding red in the clear soap base for the flowers and the non-bleeding red in the white soap base for the cake. You will only need 1 drop. A little goes a long way when using the non-bleeding red!

*Yields 8 fabulous wedding favors.
Interested in making these favors in a larger quantity? No problem! Just keep in mind that 16 oz of soap base makes roughly 8 bars of soap (with thisspecific wedding cake mold). We recommend 1/2 oz of fragrance oil per pound of soap base. And for the colorants? It’s really up to you. Add as much or as little as you want to create your perfect shade.

You Will Come Into a Fortune

We’ve finally attempted (and successfully conquered) the Fortune Cookie Soap. We were inspired last year by French Hill Country (see post here) and we just had to try it!

Ingredients

Clear Soap
Sparkle Gold Mica
Buttercream and Snickerdoodle Fragrance
Vanilla Color Stabilizer
Silicone Brownie Pan
Round Cookie Cutter
Liquid Glycerin

*Optional: White Soap
*Optional: Peach Shimmer Mica

*The cookie at the bottom of the page was made with clear soap and sparkle gold mica. The cookies at the top were made with 1/2 clear soap, 1/2 white soap (for more opacity), Sparkle Gold Mica and Peach Shimmer Mica.

Step 1: Melt 6-8 oz of soap and add your color and fragrance oil. We used the delicious, yet, discoloring, Buttercream & Snickerdoodle so we added a splash of Vanilla Color Stabilizer. Add liquid glycerinto the mixture at a 10% usage rate (about .6 oz or just a splash).Step 2: Pour a thin layer (1/8 inch) into the silicone pan and let cool for 5-10 minutes. Once the soap is cooled, punch out 5-6 round cut outs with your cookie cutter (or you can freehand them like this method). Add the scraps to the remaining melted soap and save for rounds 2 and 3.

Step 3: Fold each circle cut out in half. This is the time to insert your secret message or “fortune” if you are so inclined.

Step 4: Fold the opposite ends together with out making a crease in the middle. Our cookies turned out the best when we folded the ends together around a small object like a pen.

A Little Retail Soap Therapy

I’ve had a strange morning with things not appearing to go well. Like many women I know, I did a little shopping to pick myself up. But, unlike many women I know, I didn’t get clothes; I got soap!

Sun Basil Garden’s artist soaps did just the trick to get me into a more chipper mood and certainly, an anticipatory frame of mind. Check out her shop here and get some of your own Buttered Toast Soap or Cookies and Milk Soap.

Almond Biscotti Blends

Almond Biscotti is a fragrance that makes me get hungry and drool. It smells like almond nougat with a touch of nutmeg, butter and milk. It’s rich creamy and delicious on its own. It, not surprisingly, blends well with anything Vanilla, Chocolate or Coffee-like but it also has a delightful chameleon side, allowing it to blend with more exotic blends like the ones below. We recently updated our very popular Bath Cupcake Recipe to make a better frosting (tutorial coming in the next month when it’s perfected) and used Almond Biscotti in one of the batches. It was delish! Here are some fun blends to make your Almond Biscotti a versatile mixer.

1 part Almond Biscotti
1 part Cranberry Fig
1 part Cranberry, Sweet

3 part Almond Biscotti
1 part Orange Spice

1 parts Almond Biscotti
1 part Hello Sweet Thang

2 parts Almond Biscotti
1 part Turkish Mocha
1 part Tahitian Vanilla

Spud Soaps are Back

Duane and Nancy, from Nature’s Best Soaps, live in Idaho. They are famous for their novelty Potato Soap called Spud Soap and, of course, the unique idea is selling all over Idaho. I even picked up a spud bar at the Boise airport a few years ago. It was thrilling to randomly see their soap in the airport and I’ll admit to a bit of maternal pride when I bought the soap.

A while back, their custom potato soap molds were producing some puzzling looking soaps (see our blog post here and Duane and Nancy’s here). They were having some problems with the new silicone mold itself as well as their recipe. So we pooled the soaping community together and asked for suggestions to be posted on their blog, Squeeky Clean. Thanks to some fabulous suggestions by fellow soapers, their soap is back and better than ever.

The infamous and custom spud molds.Fresh out of the mold. The final products- aren’t they “spud-tacular”? Duane and Nancy’s number one selling Spud Soap is made with real potato that is soothing to the skin, molded into the shape of a potato and has actual “eyes”.

A note from Duane and Nancy:“After finally tweaking our recipe by reducing some of the Crisco and replacing it with the Palm Kernel Oil, we have achieved a soap that pops out of the mold with very little cleanup needed. We also have increased the temperatures from 120 to 140 degrees. That has helped to stabilize the purple color in our huckleberry spud soaps. We appreciate the time everyone took to give us suggestions and opinions as to what to try.”
