£5,000 jar of Marmalade? Talk about a niche market – and definitely an inspiration. If someone can make a $8,900 jar of marmalade, what could you do to make your soap, lotions or bath fizzies stand out? More importantly, if you created a $250 bath fizzy for charity, how much free press would you get?
Jam and marmalade maker F. Duerr & Sons, Ltd. Marked its125th birthday by creating a very special jar of marmalade costing more than £5,000 ($8,900). They autioned off the precious loot and donated the proceeds to charity.
The marmalade is packed with amazing ingredients, including gold leaf, vintage champagne and some of the world’s most expensive whiskey, as well as the finest oranges from Seville. Making the marmalade was a challenge (clumping gold leaf is always a problem apparently). Spread evenly, the product costs about £76 ($136) per slice of toast.
What can you do to capture the local media’s attention? How can you position your product to command $8,900 for a commodity? How can you elevate your craft out of a commodity business and into a luxury market?
