The moringa tree is also known as the Miracle Tree and the Tree of Life. It’s considered a superfood because the leaves are packed with vitamins A, B, and C, manganese, and protein, and the seeds contain potassium, fiber, and magnesium. This DIY mask contains moringa seed oil and moringa leaf powder to create an incredibly skin-loving product.

This mask recipe was designed with combination skin in mind. The amount of kaolin clay creates a thick but spreadable texture. If you have dry skin, you can use less kaolin clay as shown in the DIY Lavender Clay Face Mask. If you have oily skin, increase the amount of clay as shown in the DIY Sea Clay Mask. Find all of our clay mask recipes below.

This mask is lightly scented with the Spa Essential Oil Blend. It’s a complex blend of lavender fine essential oil, bergamot essential oil, rosemary essential oil, and more. If you have sensitive skin, you can omit the essential oil completely. Read more about recipe substitutions below.

A few notes about recipe substitutions and changes:

Polawax Emulsifying Wax is a highly reliable and strong emulsifier. It could be substituted for the generic version, Emulsifying Wax, if you prefer, although this recipe was not tested with Emulsifying Wax. Due to the clay in the recipe, we splurged and used Polawax Emulsifying Wax to avoid any chance of separation.

This recipe calls for avocado and moringa seed oil. Other oils can be used instead if you prefer; we recommend staying with liquid oils that absorb easily into the skin. Changing the total amount of oil in the recipe will change the overall texture of the mask.

Because this recipe is essentially a lotion and contains a large amount of water, a preservative is necessary to prevent mold and bacterial growth. We chose Optiphen, but other water-soluble preservatives will work. Learn more about preservatives here.

Increase the total amount of clay if you want it to be better suited for oily skin, or decrease the amount to make it better for dry skin. Decreasing the amount of clay may create a thinner product.

If you prefer to use different clays, feel free to swap them. Clays have different absorbing properties, which will affect how it feels on the skin. Learn which clay is right for your skin.

If you have very sensitive skin, fragrance and essential oils can be irritating. Omit from the recipe if you prefer.

Green tea extract can be substituted with a different extract if you prefer. Find more extracts here.

EQUIPMENT PREP: Disinfect your utensils by dipping them in a 5% bleach water solution and allowing to dry. This includes mixing containers, your stick blender, and any spoons or spatulas that may come in contact with your mask. Your products must be as free of germs, bacteria, and microbes as possible. To be safe, bleach water all your utensils.

CLAY PREP: In a small container, add 6 oz. of kaolin clay and 0.2 oz. of moringa leaf powder. Mix together.

ONE: In a heat-safe container, combine 1.3 oz. of avocado oil, 1 oz. of moringa seed oil, 0.8 oz. of BTMS-50, and 1 oz. of Polawax. Heat the container in the microwave using 30-60 second bursts until the waxes fully melt. Be careful when removing the container as it will be hot. Set aside.

TWO: In a separate large container, heat 21.4 oz. of distilled water in the microwave until it reaches about 160-170 ° F. Some water may evaporate during this process. If necessary, remeasure and add more distilled water until you have 21.4 oz. of hot water.

THREE: Check the temperatures of both containers. Each container should be about 160° F. If the oil and wax has cooled, place back into the microwave until fully melted. Place the stick blender into the water, and burp it to help get rid of bubbles. Pour the oil and wax mixture into the water and use a spatula to make sure every little bit is added. Begin pulsing the stick blender. The mixture will take on a “milky” appearance once the water, oil, and waxes have started to emulsify. Continue to pulse and stir for about a minute.

FOUR: Begin adding heaping spoonfuls of the kaolin clay and moringa leaf powder and pulsing the stick blender until combined. Continue to add the clay to the mixture and blend in small amounts until all the clay is added.

FIVE: Continue stick blending for about one to two minutes. Use a spatula to scrape down any clay that may be on the sides of the bowl. Check the temperature of the mixture. Once the mixture is about 130-140°F, add 0.2 oz. of Optiphen, 2 mL of Spa Essential Oil Blend, and 0.5 oz. of green tea extract. Stick blend (don’t forget to burp the stick blender) the ingredients until fully mixed.

SIX: Pour the mixture into the bail jars. If there are bubbles on the top, you can spritz with alcohol to help get rid of some of them. Allow the containers to cool for several hours with the lid open to prevent condensation.

Once fully cooled, the mixture will be a thick, lotion-like texture. To use, apply a medium layer to dry, clean skin. Avoid the immediate eye area. Allow the mask to sit on the skin for about 10-15 minutes. Use warm water to rinse off. There is no need to wash the skin after, but you can if you prefer.

Set aside.

In a separate large container, heat 21.4 oz. of distilled water in the microwave until it reaches about 160-170 ° F. Some water may evaporate during this process. If necessary, remeasure and add more distilled water until you have 21.4 oz. of hot water.

Check the temperatures of both containers.

Begin adding heaping spoonfuls of the kaolin clay and moringa leaf powder and pulsing the stick blender until combined.

Pour the mixture into the bail jars.

Rose clay is a naturally beautiful skincare ingredient. It adds a soft, rosy hue to this Rose Clay Face Mask. Rose clay has gentle oil-absorbing properties, making this mask suitable for both dry and oil skin types.

This face mask recipe was specifically designed with dry, mature skin in mind. Rosehip seed oil is rich in vitamin A and C, and intensely moisturizes without leaving a greasy feeling on the skin. Chamomile extract soothes dry skin, and is thought to be an anti-inflammatory. A downloadable label template gives a finished and polished look.

Rose absolute is extracted from rose petals, and gives the mask a soft, luxurious rose scent. It is a pricey essential oil, but you don’t need much at all. Just 1 mL of the oil is enough to elevate this mask to a truly pampering experience. If you don’t have dry or mature skin, there are three different variations of this mask recipe. This post will help you find which clay mask is right for your skin type.

Tumeric Clay Face Mask – normal, combination skin.

Lavender Clay Face Mask – dry, sensitive skin.

Sea Clay Face Mask – oil skin.

A few notes about recipe substitutions:

Polawax Emulsifying Wax is a highly reliable and strong emulsifier. It could be substituted for the generic version, Emulsifying Wax, if you prefer, although this recipe was not tested with Emulsifying Wax. Due to the clay in the recipe, we splurged and used Polawax Emulsifying Wax to avoid any chance of separation.

This recipe calls for avocado and rosehip seed oil.

We chose Optiphen, but other water soluble preservatives will work. Learn more about preservatives here.

Increase the total amount of clay if you want it to be better suited for normal to oily skin types. Decreasing the amount of clay may create a thinner product with more moisturizing properties.

If you prefer to use different clays, feel free to swap them. Clays have different absorbing properties, which will affect how it feels on the skin. Learn which clay is right for your skin.

If you have very sensitive skin, fragrance and essential oils can be irritating. Omit from the recipe if you prefer. Or, you can sub out the essential oil for a different oil.

CLAY PREP: In a small separate container, measure 3.5 ounces of kaolin clay and 1 ounce of rose clay. If you like, you can add them to the same container.

ONE: In a heat-safe container, combine the avocado oil, rosehip seed oil, BTMS-50 and Polawax. Heat the container in the microwave using 30-60 second bursts until the waxes have fully melted. Be careful when removing the container, as it will be quite hot. Set aside.

TWO: In a separate large container, heat the distilled water in the microwave (or on the stove top) until it reaches about 160-170 ° F. Once the water reaches the correct temperature, some of it may evaporate. Remeasure and add more distilled water if necessary until you have 21.4 ounces of hot water.

THREE: Check the temperatures of both containers. Each container should be about 160°-180° F. If the oil and wax mixture has cooled, place back into the microwave until fully melted. Place the stick blender into the water and burp it to help get rid of bubbles. Pour the oil and wax mixture into the water and use a spatula to make sure every little bit is added. Begin pulsing the stick blender. The mixture will take on a “milky” appearance once the water, oil and waxes have begun to emulsify. Continue to pulse and stir for about a minute.

FOUR: Begin adding heaping spoonfuls of the clay mixture and pulsing the stick blender until combined. Continue adding the clay to the mixture and blending in small amounts until all the clay is added.

FIVE: Continue stick blending for about 1-2 minutes. Use a spatula to scrape down any clay that may be on the sides of the bowl. Check the temperature of the mixture. Once the mixture is about 130-140°F, add the Optiphen, rose absolute and chamomile extract. Stick blend (don’t forget to burp the stick blender!) the ingredients in until fully mixed.

SIX: Pour the mixture into the bail jars. If you find you have a lot of bubbles on the top, you can spritz the top of the containers with 99% isopropyl alcohol to help get rid of some of them. Allow the containers to cool for several hours with the lid open to avoid condensation. Once fully cooled, the mixture will have become a thick, lotion-like texture. We found that the top of the mask does form a bit of a skin as it dries.

To use, apply a medium layer to dry, clean skin. Avoid the immediate eye area. Allow the mask to sit on the skin for about 10-15 minutes. Use warm water to rinse off. There is no need to wash the skin after, but you can if you prefer. If you have dry skin, do no use more than one time per week.

Remeasure and add more distilled water if necessary until you have 21.4 ounces of hot water.

Check the temperatures of both containers.

Begin adding heaping spoonfuls of the clay mixture and pulsing the stick blender until combined.

Pour the mixture into the bail jars.

Turmeric is a plant of the ginger family, and is usually used in dry powder form. Its commonly added to dishes like curry and has been used in Chinese medicine for years. Turmeric contains curcumin, which is an anti-oxidant and is thought to have anti-inflammatory properties. This Turmeric Clay Face Mask recipe harnesses the properties of this powerful spice, along with luxurious ingredients like carrot seed essential oil and carrot extract. They’re a blast to make, and are a great way to get creative and give your skin a fresh start to the new year!

This clay mask was specifically designed for normal to oily skin types. It contains kaolin clay, which is fine-grained and gentle on the skin. Carrot extract is high in vitamins A and E, and is thought to soothe the skin. Carrot seed essential oil is rich in vitamins and carotene. It has a distinct herby smell that’s not everybody’s favorite, but this recipe uses a small amount so it’s not overwhelming.

I was a bit worried this mask would leave my skin yellow. Luckily, it washes of clean with no staining. On a personal note, I have a bit of redness to my skin and I felt this mask really made a difference. It could be the yellow color of the turmeric neutralizing that redness, but hey, I’ll take it! As always, if you’re selling this product, you cannot claim it cures redness or any skin condition.

Speaking of medical claims and skin care products, you’ll find plenty of claims online that turmeric treats various medical conditions. If you are selling a product that contains turmeric (like this mask!), be careful about making medical claims. If your product claims to treat the skin or body in anyway, your product is considered a drug and needs testing by the FDA. Learn more about cosmetics and medical claims here.

This recipe calls for avocado and meadowfoam oil. Other oils can be used instead if you prefer; we recommend staying with liquid oils that absorb easily into the skin. Changing the total amount of oil in the recipe will change the overall texture of the mask.

Because this recipe is essentially a lotion and contains a large amount of water, a preservative is necessary to avoid mold and bacterial growth. We chose Optiphen, but other water soluble preservatives will work. Learn more about preservatives here.

Carrot extract can be substituted with a different extract if you prefer.

CLAY PREP: In a small separate container, measure 6 ounces of kaolin clay.

ONE: In a heat-safe container, combine the avocado oil, meadowfoam oil, BTMS-50 and Polawax.

The mixture will take on a “milky” appearance once the water, oil and waxes have begun to emulsify. Continue to pulse and stir for about a minute.

FOUR: Begin adding heaping spoonfuls of the kaolin clay and pulsing the stick blender until combined. Continue to add the clay to the mixture and blending in small amounts until all the clay is added.

FIVE: Continue stick blending for about one to two minutes. Use a spatula to scrape down any clay that may be on the sides of the bowl. Check the temperature of the mixture. Once the mixture is about 130-140°F, add the Optiphen, carrot seed essential oil and carrot extract. Stick blend (don’t forget to burp the stick blender!) the ingredients in until fully mixed.

SIX: Add the turmeric powder and stick blend until completely mixed in. Continue to stick blend for several more minutes, just to make sure the ingredients are fully emulsified.

SEVEN: Pour the mixture into the bail jars. If you find you have a lot of bubbles on the top, you can spritz the top of the containers with alcohol to help get rid of some of them.

Once fully cooled, the mixture will have become a thick, lotion-like texture. To use, apply a medium layer to dry, clean skin. Avoid the immediate eye area. Allow the mask to sit on the skin for about 10-15 minutes. Use warm water to rinse off. There is no need to wash the skin after, but you can if you prefer.

With the weather warming up, now is a great time to give your facial skin a little TLC. This Silky Coconut Milk Face Mask is made with coconut milk powder, colloidal oatmeal and kaolin clay to create a product that is incredibly gentle. The coconut milk powder is full of vitamins, and gives the mask a lovely coconut scent. Kaolin clay adds a silky feeling, while colloidal oatmeal adds a touch of exfoliation. A combination of vitamin E oil and Evening Primrose Extract give the mask moisturizing and soothing properties.

To use, scoop a small amount of the powder and mix with either water or oil to make a paste. If you have oily skin, mix this recipe with a bit of warm water for an oil-absorbing mask. If you have dry skin, mix the mask with a lightweight oil or thin lotion to add moisture. Argan oil, avocado oil, sweet almond oil or any other moisturizing oil would work well. Apply the mask to clean skin, and allow to sit on the skin for 3-5 minutes. Wash off, and apply moisturizer.

Easy to make and fun to use, clay masks are the perfect way to give facial skin extra TLC. In this Soap Queen TV short video, Anne-Marie shows you how to make a clay mask that moisturizes and exfoliates. Made with luxurious argan and meadowfoam oil, this mask gives the skin essential nutrients such as vitamin E. As you wash the mask off, the walnut shells and clays gently exfoliate away dry, flaky skin.

This mask has a thick, spreadable texture. If you prefer a thinner mask, you can add slightly more oil. When removing the mask, use a gentle cleanser to thoroughly rinse off the clay. Because of the vibrant red color, the clay does have the possibility to stain washcloths. Using a cleanser and hands works just fine when removing the mask.

Here’s a quick and adaptable recipe for a gentle facial scrub and mask. It works great as a simple exfoliater, but for an added boost leave it on your skin as a mask to absorb oil and clean pores. Skin-loving ingredients and gentle oils make this scrub and mask a soothing addition to any skin care routine.

Recipe:

2 1/2 cups Oatmeal (NOT quick oats)

1/2 cup Bentonite Clay

2 Tablespoons Lemon Peel Powder

3 mL Oat Extract

3 mL Vitamin E Oil

Hungarian Lavender

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Egyptian Geranium Essential Oil

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

2 – 8 oz. Plastic Bail Jars

Aloe Vera Liquid or Chamomile Tea (for hydrating the mask)

OPTIONAL: Lavender Grade 1

Click here to add everything you need for this project to your Bramble Berry shopping cart!

ONE: In a food processor or coffee grinder, process the oats and the Lemon Peel Powder separately. You want to get as close to the consistency of the Bentonite Clay as possible, which won’t take very long to achieve with the Lemon Peel Powder but may require some time with the oats.

TWO: In a bowl, mix the ground oatmeal, ground Lemon Peel Powder, and Bentonite Clay. A whisk or slotted spoon probably works best.

NOTE: The consistency of the ingredients might cause powdery clouds when you mix them. Wear a mask if you’ve got a sensitive nose!

THREE: Add the Oat Extract and mix well. Add the Vitamin E Oil and mix well. You want to add each of these ingredients individually and mix between additions so you get less clumps.

FOUR: Add 9 drops Hungarian Lavender Essential Oil and 2 drops each of the Tea Tree Essential Oil, Egyptian Geranium Essential Oil, and Ylang Ylang Essential Oil. Again, you’ll want to stir between each addition to avoid clumping.

FIVE: Split the mix between the two glass bail jars.

OPTIONAL: For an extra luxe product, process 1-2 tablespoons of Lavender Grade 1 in a food processor or coffee grinder. Add to the mix before pouring into the bail jars, or pour the mix into the bail jars then sprinkle a bit of processed Lavender on the top in the center for a decorative finished look.

To hydrate and use: In a small bowl, add 2-3 tablespoons of liquid to 2 tablespoons of the scrub mask mix to form a loose paste. I like to hydrate with Aloe Vera Liquid or Chamomile tea. Spread the paste on your face and leave until dry (about 10-15 minutes). Rinse the scrub mask off with warm water, scrubbing the mask in a circular motion as you rinse for light exfoliation. Follow with your regular skin routine. Other options to hydrate the mask with include honey dissolved in warm water, or simply water on it’s own.

About the ingredients:

Oatmeal, when hydrated, naturally moisturizes and creates a protective barrier on the skin. It also acts as a natural pore cleanser, and is soothing to sensitive skin. If you’ll be gifting or selling this product, beware that those who are allergic to gluten might have a reaction to the oatmeal.

Bentonite Clay absorbs oils and toxins from the skin’s surface.

Lemon Peel has been known to add a healthy glow and improve skin clarity. It is also believed to be a beneficial part of an acne-prone skin care routine.

Oat Extract is known to sooth, nourish and moisturize skin as well as being particularly beneficial to those with sensitive skin.

Vitamin E Oil is a common oil used in skin care. It’s an anti-oxidant that helps to deter the effects of free radicals on your skin.

Hungarian Lavender Essential Oil is a mild-smelling oil. Lavender is thought to have calming and soothing aroma-therapeutic properties and is generally mild enough for all skin types.

Tea Tree Essential Oil has antiseptic, anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties and is commonly used in the treatment of acne.

Egyptian Geranium Essential Oil is believed to have skin-softening properties and to be beneficial to those with mature skin, as well as having stress-reducing aroma-therapeutic properties. If you’ll be gifting or selling this product, beware that those who are allergic to rose may have a reaction to Egyptian Geranium.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil has antiseptic properties and is thought to be beneficial to balancing skin tone and oil content on the surface. If you’ll be gifting or selling this product, beware that those who have sensitive skin might have a reaction to Ylang Ylang.

Aloe Vera Liquid is another common skin care ingredient. It’s an excellent moisturizer and has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Chamomile is a soothing cleanser. Much like Aloe Vera, it’s anti-inflammatory and is commonly used in the treatment of acne. You can either hydrate your mask with chamomile tea, or at night pat used chamomile tea bags on your face and rinse in the morning.
