Rubber Ducky Soap Tutorial

I had a dream about this soap project and I actually got up to write notes down in my phone. Does anyone else ever have soaping dreams? It’s a blessing and a curse. I didn’t get much restful sleep that night (I dare you try to sleep with giant ducks roiling in foamy soap!) but I did come away with a super cute Rubber Ducky Soap project! I hope you like it.

I used the swirling cube technique from a couple weeks ago. Don’t you just love how easy it is to swirl by controlling your temperatures? I want to see you make this project or a variation of it on the Bramble Berry Facebook page. Flaunt your Easter soaps!

Caramel Apple Soap Tutorial

With Halloween “creeping” up on us, I’ve been thinking I should get a head start on my Halloween gifts. These Caramel Apple Soaps look and smell delicious. I felt like I was making real caramel apples! Let these be your Fall hostess gifts this year whether it be a Halloween Party or just a fun get together with your friends. Embedding Toys in Soap on Soap Queen TV

Soapylove Technique Post – 3 Color Fade

Rainbows and hearts… I can’t seem to get enough! One of my favorite looks lately is graduated color. Several years ago I taught at Otion’s Soap Weekend Intensive and was thrilled to attend a class by Paula of PJ Soaps (she’ll be teaching again this summer!). She showed how to make her beautiful moon soap (click here for tutorial), where she tilts the mold to get a lovely fade between the moon and midnight sky.

I have used this several times with a single tilted color, but realized if you use one on each side and then fill the center, that you can get a 3 color fade!

Here’s what you’ll need:
Coral Mica
Yellow Mica
Liquid Blue
Striped Heart Mold
NOTE: The mold in this tutorial has been discontinued. The kit now contains the Swirled Heart Mold.
Clear M&P soap base
White M&P soap base

Here’s how to do it:

Prop your mold up on one side or corner. I used the Soapylove Striped Heart Mold. Next, melt and color a small amount of clear soap using non-bleeding red or coral mica. Spray your mold with alcohol, then pour a small amount of soap into one side, allowing it to only cover 1/3 of your mold surface.

It’s okay if your color doesn’t line up perfectly with the stripes. Allow to harden. Now turn around your mold so the opposite side is propped up. Melt and pour some blue soap into the opposite side, again only covering 1/3 of the mold face. Allow to harden.

Move your mold to be flat on the table. Color your third batch of soap yellow, spray mold with alcohol, and pour in soap so it fills the center area and covers a bit of each side color. Allow to harden. Spray with alcohol and top off with fragranced white soap. Voila!

Here’s a tip: color your soap with a light hand – if your colors are too dark then the background color won’t show through. When I do this project again, I’ll use a little less blue so the green tone will be more noticeable.

Victorian Swirl 3D Melt & Pour Soap Tutorial

Ingredients

4 oz. Clear Melt & Pour soap base

3 oz. White Melt & Pour soap base

Heavy Metal Gold Mica

Liquid Black colorant

Apricot Freesia Fragrance Oil

Victorian Blossom 3D mold

(NOTE: The Victorian Blossom 3D mold has been discontinued. It has been substituted with the 12 Cavity Rectangle Silicone Mold.)

Recipe Yields 1 Soap

Get everything you need to make 4 bars of stunning 3D soap with the click of a button!

ONE: Melt one ounce of the clear soap base and add four to five drops liquid black colorant. Pour the black soap into the design of the front side of the mold. Allow to set-up completely and clean-up any drips using a clean up tool. Spritz the soap with rubbing alcohol then assemble the 3D soap mold.

(NOTE: The Victorian Blossom 3D mold has been discontinued. It has been substituted with the 12 Cavity Rectangle Silicone Mold. To achieve a Celtic design, simply paint on the design using gold mica.)

Tip: Make sure that the holes on each side of the mold are matched up (it’s easy to put one hole on the top and one on the bottom – whoops) and secure the top and the bottom of the mold with the thick rubber band.

TWO: Melt the rest of the clear soap and mix in Heavy Metal Gold mica and fragrance oil (.1 oz per bar or .5 – .7 oz. for the full two pounds). In a separate container, melt the white soap base and mix in the fragrance oil.

THREE: Alternate pouring the two colors and poking the soap skin with a skewer to swirl the soap. For a full tutorial on how to swirl melt and pour, see the video on SoapQueen.TV.

FOUR: Once the soap is completely set up (4-6 hours), remove from the mold and trim the edges using a clean up tool or a non-serrated knife.

FIVE: Highlight the design by dry brushing the Heavy Metal Gold mica over the raised areas of the design. See this tutorial on the Soap Queen Blog for how to dry brush your soap.

Neopolitan Sugar Scrub Cubes Recipe

In this episode of Soap Queen TV, I show you how to make Erin Pikor’s (of Naiad Soap Arts) wildly popular solid sugar scrub soap. The original post on how to make these solid sugar scrubs is a classic project that our readers keep coming back to.

In the video, I put my own little twist on this project by taking inspiration from Neopolitan ice cream. I made cubes of Strawberry, Chocolate and Vanilla. Yum!

Peppermint Bark Soap for the Holidays

It’s time to officially kick off the holiday season with our first Christmas tutorial of the year! Keep it clean this holiday with delicious smelling and realistic looking Peppermint Bark Soap.

Ingredients

White Melt and Pour

Clear Melt and Pour

Goat Milk Melt and Pour

Dark Rich Chocolate Fragrance Oil

Peppermint 2nd Distillation Essential Oil

Perfect Red Color Block

Brick Red Oxide

Liquid Brown Oxide

Liquid Black Oxide

Get everything you need for this project in the click of a button!

ONE: Melt 5 ounces of white soap base and pour it into the silicone tray mold and let cool. Then melt 5 ounces of clear soap base and mix in Perfect Red Color Block and Brick Red Oxide (2 parts Perfect Red and 1 part Brick Red Oxide makes a perfect candy cane red). Pour the red soap on top of the white soap and let cool.

Hint: Make a slurry with your red oxide by mixing it with a little rubbing alcohol before adding it to your soap. This will eliminate speckles.

TWO: Unmold the soap and cut into small, irregular pieces. These are going to be the peppermint crumbles on top so uneven cuts make them look super realistic.

THREE: Melt 16 ounces of clear soap and mix in ½ ounce of (delicious) Dark Rich Chocolate Fragrance Oil. To make the realistic chocolaty color, combine Liquid Brown Oxide with a skosh of Liquid Black Oxide. Let cool.

FOUR: Melt 16 ounces of white Goat Milk soap base and mix in ½ ounce of Peppermint 2nd Distillation Essential Oil. Let cool to 130 degrees, spritz the “chocolate” layer with rubbing alcohol and pour about 12-13 ounces of the goat milk soap, saving 3-4 ounces (you can totally eyeball the amount, just make sure to save a little bit).

FIVE: Once the soap has cooled, remelt the remaining 3-4 ounces of goat milk soap base to 130 degrees. Start spritzing your “peppermint” pieces with rubbing alcohol and get ready to sprinkle them on top of the final layer of soap. Spritz the top layer of soap and pour the remaining 3-4 ounces of goat milk soap then sprinkle on your “crushed candy cane” garnish.

SIX: Once the soap has cooled, cut the soap into triangles and trick your friends into taking a bite of delicious Chocolate Peppermint Bark.

For those of you who missed Soap Weekend Intensive 2010, here’s an exclusive peek at one of the creative projects that was taught by Erin Pikor, of Naiad Soap Arts – Summer Strawberry Pie!

White Melt & Pour Soap Base

ONE: To create the “strawberries” for our pie, make a deep pink color with 8 oz white m&p soap base and the Perfect Red Color Block. Mix well and pour the soap into the silicone tray mold. Once the soap is set-up, remove from the mold and cut the soap into small, irregular chunks with the crinkle cutter. Set the pink soap chunks aside for use later.

TWO: Now it’s time to make our “pie crust”. For a warm toasty crust color, melt 8 oz. white m&p soap base and mix in 6 to 8 drops liquid yellow oxide, and 2 to 3 drops liquid brown oxide. Mix well and pour the soap into the silicone tray mold. Let cool and remove the soap from the tray mold. Use your crinkle cutter to cut the soap into diagonal strips and set aside.

THREE: Before we start embedding, lay out your strips (on a clean cutting surface) in a criss cross lattice pattern. This is is how we’re going to embed them in the soap.

FOUR: Melt 16 ounces clear m&p soap and cool to 120 degrees. Pour a shallow layer into the brownie pan and work quickly to layer in your first layer of toasty strips, being sure to spray frequently with rubbing alcohol. Pour another thin layer of clear soap and add the rest of your strips in the opposite direction, making a criss-cross pattern. You only end up using about 4 ounces of the soap.

FIVE: With your remaining 12 ounces of clear soap add Merlot Mica and Strawberry Seeds. Mix well then scent with a blend of Strawberry and Almond Biscotti fragrance (we used 4 parts Strawberry and 1 part Almond Biscotti but get creative and use any ratio that you want).

SIX: Spray the lattice with rubbing alcohol and pour half of your Strawberry soap. Then generously sprinkle your pink soap chunks in (spraying everything furiously with rubbing alcohol). Then pour the remaining strawberry soap over the top. It’s o.k. if a few pieces are sticking out.

SEVEN: Once your soap is completely set-up, pop out of the mold and cut into little pieces with the daisy cutter. Or use your crinkle cutter to cut into rectangles like the picture at the top. Hurrah! Cute soap!

Cherry Cupcake Melt and Pour Soap Tutorial

Bramble Berry’s new cupcake mold makes it easier than ever to whip out a batch of soapy cupcakes from scratch! You’ll be sweetly showering with cupcake goodness in no time.

Learn how to make these adorable melt and pour soap cupcakes! Great project for beginners.

Ingredients

16 oz White Soap Base

ELF Cupcake Mold

(Note: This mold has been discontinued.

It has been substituted with the Round (cupcake) Silicone Mold.)

Black Cherry Fragrance Oil

Bright Cherry LabColor

ONE: Melt 16 ounces of white soap base in the microwave and mix in ½ ounce of Cherry Pop Fragrance Oil.

Note: The ELF Cupcake Mold has been discontinued. It has been substituted with the Round (cupcake) Silicone Mold. To create a two tone cupcake, make soap in the Round (cupcake) Silicone Mold, then top it with this Foaming Bath Whip Frosting.

TWO: Separate the scented soap evenly into two containers or mugs. Add the canary colorant to one container of soap and the cherry colorant to the other. Just a couple of drops of undiluted color will do the trick. Mix both well.

THREE: Fill up two cupcake cavities with the yellow soap and the other 2 cupcake cavities with the pink soap. Spritz with rubbing alcohol to eliminate air bubbles and let the soaps cool for about 2-4 hours.

FOUR: Once the soaps have cooled, remove them from the mold and carefully cut off the frosting parts of each cupcake. Then cut the yellow frosting tops into small chunks and melt the soap back down in the microwave. Repeat with the pink soap.

SIX: While the pink and yellow soaps are in the microwave, place all of the cupcake bottoms back into the mold and firmly press them down.

SEVEN: Once the pink and yellow soap is melted and isn’t so hot that it’s steaming (don’t want it to melt the cuppy base), spray the cupcake bottoms with rubbing alcohol (to ensure that the layers stick together) and fill up the frosting part of each cavity mixing and matching colors. Pink cupcake bottoms get yellow frosting and yellow cupcake bottoms get pink frosting. Give the soaps a final spritz with rubbing alcohol to eliminate air bubbles and let cool. Pop out after a thorough cool down (usually 6 to 8 hours).

Cherry Cupcake Melt and Pour Soap Tutorial

These cherry cupcake soaps are made with a cupcake shaped mold, making the project perfect for beginners.

Red White and Blue Massage Bars

My brother, Erik (from ELF Industrial, Otion and The Soap King blog), designed 2 massage soap molds: The Round Massage Mold and the Oval Massage Mold. They have been a huge hit so far so I thought I would do a last minute 4th of July project with them. This project literally took me 10 minutes, it couldn’t have been easier. Give it a try!

Ingredients for the soaps pictured above

12 oz. Clear Soap Base
1 oz. White Soap Base

Oval Massage Mold

.25 oz. Coconut Citrus Sorbet

Liquid Blue Colorant

Non-Bleeding Perfect Red Color Block

Grab everything you need for this project by clicking HERE!

ONE: Melt 1 ounce of white melt and pour in the microwave and use a dropper to fill in the dots. Let cool for about 5 minutes.

TWO: Melt 11 ounces of clear soap base in the microwave and add .25 ounces of your favorite summertime fragrance oil (I used Coconut Citrus Sorbet). Mix well and separate the soap into two separate containers. Color one container of melted soap with Liquid Blue and the other with Perfect Red Color Block. Mix both colors well.

THREE: Once the melted blue soap has cooled to 125 degrees, spray the first layer of white soap with rubbing alcohol and fill up two cavities with the blue soap. Spritz with the rubbing alcohol to get rid of any air bubbles and repeat with the melted red soap. Let cool for 4-6 hours.

Easy 4th of July Star Soap

I love celebrating the 4th of July holiday with my friends and family. It’s tradition to do a big BBQ on Lake Samish filled with swimming, volleyball, food, drinks and SOAP! Send your guests home with something special! Learn how to make cute star soap below.

Ingredients

Stars Mold

12 Bar Square Silicone Mold

Liquid Blue

Perfect Red Color Block

Yields 4 soaps

ONE:Melt 4 ounces of white melt and pour soap base, stir in your favorite fragrance oil. Fill each star cavity. Let cool and unmold.

Variation:Add Liquid Red or Liquid Blue to 4 ounces clear soap base with a splash of glitter if you want to embed colored stars.

TWO: Melt 16 ounce of clear soap base in the microwave. Add a tiny bit of liquid blue colorant to get a clear effect (for more info on the “bluing” technique see this Soap Queen TV video). Do not add fragrance at this time.

THREE: Pour a 1/8” thick layer of the clear soap into each cavity of the Slim Square and spritz with rubbing alcohol.

FOUR: Spritz the thin clear layer of soap and soap stars with rubbing alcohol. Then pour another thin layer of clear soap into each cavity and place your stars into the melted soap. Make sure that your soap is around 125 degrees to avoid melting the soap stars.

FIVE: To the remaining melted clear soap base, add your favorite fragrance oil and either red or blue colorant (and glitter if you’re feeling sassy). Mix well.
Note: The Heavy Duty Slim Square Mold has been discontinued and substituted with out 12 Bar Square Silicone Mold

SIX:Spritz the cooled layer of soap with the stars and pour your final colored background layer. Spritz again with rubbing alcohol to get rid of any air bubbles. Let the soaps cool, pop them out of the mold and celebrate the 4th of July with your friends and family.

Candy Cane Soap Tutorial

Are you having guests over this Christmas? Sneak these Candy Cane Soaps into the guest bathroom for holiday ambiance. Just tell the little ones not to eat them, they look and smell like the real thing.

This project involves mixing melt and pour with glycerin to give it a softer, pliable texture. As soon as the soap is cool enough to handle, it’s cut into strips and molded into candy cane shapes. Timing is crucial for this project. Once you pour the soap into the mold, don’t walk away! The cooler and harder the soap, the more difficult it is to mold.

Once you start twisting and molding the candy canes, work quickly. We recommend having a soaping buddy for this process. If the slab of soap becomes too cold, it becomes very difficult to twist the soap without breaking.

Ingredients
6″ Silicone Slab Mold

7 oz. Clear Melt and Pour Soap

3 oz. White Melt and Pour Soap

2 mL Peppermint Essential Oil

1 oz. Liquid Glycerin

Red Mica
Fine Silver Rainbow EcoGlitter
99% Isopropyl Alcohol in Spray Bottle

ONE: Melt 3 ounces of White Melt and Pour Soap Base in the microwave using 10 second bursts. Add 1 mL of peppermint essential oil and 0.5 ounces of liquid glycerin. Stir together. Pour the soap into the mold and spritz with 99% isopropyl alcohol to eliminate bubbles. Let the layer cool for about 5 minutes. If the soap has a skin on top that can support more soap, it’s ready for the next layer.

TWO: Melt 3 ounces of Clear Melt and Pour Base in the microwave using 10 second bursts. Add 1 mL of Peppermint Essential Oil and 0.5 ounces of liquid glycerin. Stir together. Add about 1/16 teaspoon of the Red Mica and mix together. Once the red soap has cooled to 125 degrees F, spritz the white layer of soap with 99% isopropyl alcohol and pour the red soap into the mold. Let the soap cool for about 5 minutes.

THREE: Once the soap has cooled enough to unmold but is still warm, remove it from the mold and place it on a cutting board. With a craft knife and ruler, cut the soap into thin strips.

My creation

FOUR: Place two of the freshly cut soap strands on top of each other (so they look like a checkered board) and squish them together as much as possible.

FIVE: Gently twist the soap and curl the top so it looks like a candy cane. Timing is very important. You need to work quickly to mold the candy canes while the soap is still pliable. You’ll have about 5 minutes to do all of the twisting before the soap gets too hard to be pliable and breaks.

SIX: Once all the candy canes have been twisted, melt 4 ounces of Clear Melt and Pour Soap Base using 10 second bursts. Mix in about 1/4 teaspoon of Fine Silver Rainbow EcoGlitter. Feel free to add more glitter if you prefer. Dip the candy canes in the sparkly soap. Then, you can either lay the soap flat on a silicone mold to dry, or create a “hanging contraption” as shown below to allow the soap to drip off. Allow the soap to fully cool and harden. Enjoy!

Candy Cane Drying Contraption: We came up with a silly contraption to dry our candy canes, and you probably have the supplies in your home to make one too. We used 2 medium sized jars (or mugs), a ruler, a chopstick (or skewer) and salt to weight the jars so they don’t tip over.

Glitter Cut Out Soap Tutorial

ONE: Melt 4 ounces of clear melt and pour soap and mix in 1 ml of Bramble Berry’s favorite new fragrance oil, Wassail. It smells like hot, spiced Christmas Punch and has notes of tangerine, juicy apple and orange zest spiced with ginger, cinnamon stick, nutmeg and clove. Are you drooling yet?

TWO: Stir in a couple drops of liquid black colorant and 1 mini scoop of Merlot Mica and pour the soap into 1 cavity of the scalloped rectangle mold. Allow the soap to cool for 4-6 hours

NOTE: The Scalloped Rectangle Mold has been discontinued. It has been substituted with the 12 Cavity Rectangle Silicone Mold.

Variation: OR stir in a mini scoop of Brick Red Oxide. Try mixing the oxide with a little rubbing alcohol before adding it to the soap. This will eliminate any clumping of the colorant.

THREE: Melt 6 ounces of clear melt and pour soap and mix in 1.5 ml of Wassail fragrance oil.

FOUR: Stir in a couple drops of liquid brown colorant and pour the soap into the brownie pan tray mold. Allow the soap to cool for 20-30 minutes and pull the soap out of the mold.

FIVE: Now it’s time to make our cut outs and you have a big decision to make. Are you going to use a cookie cutter or a stencil? Below are both variations…

Using a cookie cutter: Press your cookie cutter into the soap. Pull the cookie cutter out of the soap and pop out the soap piece. Then, smooth the edges with your finger.

Using a Stencil: You can either use our PDF template or leaves you’ve collected. Cut the paper around the object and place it on the flat square of soap. Lightly cut the paper with your craft knife so it leaves an outline on the soap. Then, remove your paper and follow your original outline and cut all the way through the soap. SIX: Spritz your cut out piece with hair spray and sprinkle glitter onto the piece of soap. (Did you miss the ‘How to color glitter’ post? Click here to review it and learn how to make all kinds of fun glitter colors.) The hair spray will help the glitter stick to the soap. Dump the excess glitter into a bowl for later use.

SEVEN: Melt 1 ounce of clear melt and pour. Use a dropper and place a drop or two of melted soap in the center of your scalloped rectangle soap. Then place the glittered cut out on top of the melted soap and let cool (about 5 minutes).

EIGHT: Give the soap a final spritz with hair spray to make sure your glitter sticks.
