Made with coffee grounds, coffee butter and coffee oil, this easy scrub is perfect for any coffee-lover. Coffee grounds exfoliate away dead skin, while the coffee oil and coffee butter leave skin feeling smooth. A touch of potassium cocoate prevents an overly-greasy feel.

This scrub can be used with fresh or used coffee grounds. If you add used coffee grounds, make sure they are completely dry to avoid bacterial growth. Any product that contains water needs a preservative to prevent mold. While this scrub is only made with oil and potassium cocoate, the recipe does contain Optiphen because it may come in contact with water in the shower. It can be omitted if you prefer.

Coffee oil is the star of this scrub. It is extracted directly from roasted coffee beans and has a thick texture and dark color. The combination of the coffee oil, coffee butter, and coffee grounds gives the recipe a nice coffee smell. We added a touch of Espresso Fragrance Oil to give the scrub slightly sweeter notes. If you’re using quality, fresh coffee grounds, you may find you don’t need to use any fragrance oil at all.

This scrub is quite “dry,” but leaves behind a light oily-feel on the skin. While the coffee oil is quite dark, the scrub doesn’t leave any color on the skin, thanks to the potassium cocoate. You could also use a liquid soap base if you prefer.

What You’ll Need:
Four 4 oz. Bail Jars
7 oz. Fresh Coffee Grounds
3 oz. Sweet Almond Oil
1 oz. Coffee Butter
1 oz. Coffee Seed Oil
1.5 oz. Potassium Cocoate

ONE: In a heat-safe container, add the sweet almond oil and coffee butter. Place the container in the microwave and heat using 20-30 second bursts until the coffee butter is melted.

TWO: Add the coffee oil to the warm oils and stir to combine. Add the potassium cocoate, Optiphen, and Espresso Fragrance Oil to the mixture and stir until everything is completely mixed together.

THREE: Measure the coffee grounds into a large mixing bowl. Pour the warm oil mixture into the coffee grounds and stir to fully combine.

FOUR: To use, apply the coffee grounds to wet skin and scrub. Rinse off and pat dry.

Orange is one of my go-to fragrances. It’s so bright, fresh and universally loved. For this simple salt scrub, I drew inspiration from my favorite citrus. The base is fine grained Dead Sea salt with poppy seeds for extra scrub, and orange peel powder for color. The orange peel powder does add a bit of scent, but this scrub really gets a strong citrus smell from  10X Orange Essential Oil. The term “10X” means it has been folded (or concentrated) ten times to create an intense, pure essential oil. It also adds a bit of natural color to the scrub as well.

What You’ll Need:

Sugar scrubs are a favorite of mine; they are easy to make and sugar feels refreshing and nice on the skin. Using up the sugar in my pantry also prevents sugar temptation! To give this Wildflower Honey Sugar Scrub a little extra “oomph,” I added strawberry seeds. They are a mild tan color and are a little rougher than granulated sugar. Because of this, I recommend this scrub for the body and not for the face. As a bonus, we designed free downloadable labels for this scrub. The template includes labels for the Pure Honey Cold Process Soap and Beeswax Lotion Bars (coming later this week). Find them here.

A combination of jojoba oil and potassium cocoate are added to the dry ingredients for a soft, wet sand texture. Jojoba oil is a luxurious liquid wax that is produced from the seed of the jojoba shrub. Click here to learn more about jojoba oil. Potassium cocoate is the potassium salt of coconut fatty acid, and acts similar to liquid soap. In this scrub, it helps give a mild lather and leaves skin feeling clean rather than oily.

What You’ll Need:

This Blueberry Jam Sugar Scrub will get your skin exfoliated and ready for shorts and tank tops. Sugar, Jasmine Jojoba Beads and Sierra Sky Jojoba Beads exfoliate and leave the skin feeling fresh. The jojoba beads also add a lovely blueberry color to the scrub. To lightly cleanse the skin, it contains potassium cocoate. Fractionated coconut oil adds some moisture to the recipe.

Jojoba beads are perfect for scrubs. Along with adding gentle exfoliation to your recipe, they also add a gorgeous color. The Fresh Rain Sugar Scrub gets its blue hue from Ocean Blue Jojoba Beads. Using different colors and layering them creates a fun rainbow effect in this Rainbow Jojoba Bead Sugar Scrub.

The Rainbow Jojoba Bead Scrub uses five different colors of jojoba beads. Sugar adds more scrubbiness to the recipe, which gets rid of dead skin and helps your moisturizer absorb. Spring Meadow Fragrance Oil adds a scent that is reminiscent of a bouquet of fresh flowers. Potassium cocoate gives the scrub lather and leaves your skin feeling non-greasy. Potassium cocoate is the potassium salt of coconut fatty acid. It’s an all natural liquid surfactant made from 100% whole coconut oil and potassium hydroxide. It works great in scrubs, shampoos and liquid soaps.

This scrub works great for your body. It is also gentle enough to use on your face. The scrub is strongly scented, so you may want to use less fragrance if you use this scrub for your face.

What You’ll Need:
12 oz. sugar
2 oz. Mango Butter
3 oz. Potassium Cocoate
1 Tbsp. Forest Green Jojoba Beads

TWO: Melt 2 oz. of mango butter in a heat safe container on 30 second bursts. Microwaving on short bursts prevents the mango butter from getting too hot, which can cause graininess. If there are several chunks of mango butter in the mixture, stir until they melt.

THREE: Add 3 oz. of potassium cocoate and stir until the mixture thickens. Add 8 mL of the carrot extract and 8 mL of Spring Meadow Fragrance Oil and stir well.

FOUR: Check the temperature of the mixture. If it is cooler than 176 F, add 8 mL of the Optiphen. If your scrub is warmer than 176 F, the preservative may not be effective.
Note: Although this scrub doesn’t contain water, it will likely get water splashed in it during use. The extra water may cause bacteria and mold to grow. We added a preservative to be extra careful. You can read more in the Talk It Out Tuesday: Preservatives post.
FIVE: In a separate container large enough to hold the entire mixture, measure out 12 oz. of sugar. Add the mango butter and potassium cocoate mixture and stir well.

SIX: Spoon the mixture evenly into each jojoba bead container. There should be about 3.5 oz. in each container. You can use a scale to measure it out or just eyeball it.

SEVEN: Stir each color well and spoon into the bail jars. We layered green, purple, blue, red and orange, but you can choose any color order you like! Let the mixture cool completely and it’s ready to use.
Note: Spoon the mixture around the sides of the container rather than right in the middle. That will help prevent the scrub from sinking in the middle and will give you more even lines.
