Washington state is known for its delicious apples. In fact, Washington produces 6 out of every 10 apples consumed in the United States! To highlight this local ingredient, applesauce from BelleWood Acres was added to this cold process recipe. BelleWood Acres is one of Northwest Washington’s largest apple orchards. It’s located just about 15 minutes away from the Bramble Berry offices and is a great addition to the community. Using a local ingredient in your soap is a fantastic way to highlight where it comes from and support other makers in your area.

Normally when one thinks apples, a deep color palette of red and green come to mind. But because this soap contains applesauce made with Honeycrisp apples, we used colors inspired by them. That means shades of bright red/pink, green and a touch of yellow. Then, a Hanger Swirl is used to pull the colors up and down to mimic the stripes on the apples. Apple Macintosh Candle & Soap Fragrance Oil gives the bars a slightly tart and fruity scent.

If you’ve never added a puree to your soap before, read this article to learn how. Don’t worry about the applesauce going bad in the soap. It goes through the saponification process along with the oils and lye. The high pH of the soap batter contributes to this process (which is why adding purees to melt and pour is not recommended). To account for the extra water in the applesauce, this recipe contains a 10% water discount. I also recommend soaping at slightly cooler temperatures to compensate for the sugar in the applesauce. If you live in a hot climate, you may want to place the soap in the fridge after pouring into the mold to keep temperatures cool. The extra natural sugar will contribute to a fluffy lather in the final bars of soap. When selecting the applesauce, make sure it does not have any extra ingredients like preservatives. These could cause unpredictable results in your soap.

COLOR PREP: In separate containers, disperse 1 tsp. Buttercup Mica and 1 tsp. Sunset Orange Mica into 1 tablespoon lightweight liquid oil. Then in separate containers, disperse 1/2 tsp. Kermit Green Mica and 1/2 tsp. Raspberry Mica into 1/2 tablespoon lightweight liquid oil (like sweet almond or sunflower oil). Use a mini mixer to help get rid of any clumps.

FRAGRANCE PREP: Measure 1.7 ounces of Apple Macintosh Fragrance Oil into a glass, fragrance oil safe container. Set aside.

APPLE PREP: Measure out 2 ounces of applesauce. Set aside. 

ONE: Slowly and carefully add the lye to the water and gently stir until the lye has fully dissolved and the liquid is clear. Set aside to cool. If you’d like a harder bar of soap that releases faster from the mold, you can add sodium lactate to the cooled lye water. Use 1 teaspoon of sodium lactate per pound of oils in the recipe. For this recipe, you’d add 2 teaspoons sodium lactate.

TWO: Fully melt and combine the coconut oil, palm oil, olive oil, castor oil, shea butter and avocado oil (remember to fully melt then mix your entire container of palm oil before portioning). Add the applesauce to the melted oils and stick blend for about a minute. Stick blending the applesauce before adding lye helps blend the applesauce into a smoother consistency without accelerating trace.

THREE: Add the lye water to the oils and stick blend until thin trace. After about 10-20 seconds of blending, you’ll notice the batter start to darken into a honey color. This is due to the sugar content in the applesauce.

FOUR: Once you’ve reached a thin trace, split the soap into four equal containers. Each container will have about 400 mL. Check out that color change!

FIVE: Add the following amounts of dispersed mica into each container. Use a whisk to fully mix in the color.

• Container A (pink): 1 tsp. dispersed Raspberry Mica + 1 tsp. Sunset Orange Mica
• Container B (green): 1 tsp. dispersed Kermit Green Mica
• Container C (orange): 1 tsp. dispersed Sunset Orange Mica
• Container D (yellow): All dispersed Buttercup Mica

SIX: Add the Apple Macintosh Candle & Soap Fragrance Oil evenly into each container (it’s okay to eyeball it). Use a whisk to fully mix in the fragrance oil into each container.

SEVEN: Begin pouring stripes of each color down the length of the mold. It doesn’t really matter what color you start with, or in what order you pour the colors. I started with orange, then poured in the pink, green and yellow. Pour the colors from various heights so they break through to the layer below. Don’t worry about being too precise with each pour.

EIGHT: Continue pouring the colors into the mold. Expect to have enough soap for about four pours of each color. Continue pouring until you have a small amount of each color for the top.

NINE: Insert the Hanger Swirl Tool into one side of the mold, all the way to the bottom. Drag the hanger against the bottom of the mold toward you. Once you drag the hanger about 1/8th of the way, pull the hanger up until it almost breaks through the top of the soap, but not quite. Move the hanger toward you about 1/8th of the way. Push the hanger back down into the soap, and drag the hanger against the bottom of the mold and move it toward you again, moving about 1/8th of the way. Bring the hanger up until it almost breaks the top, then move it over and push it back down. Repeat this process again, moving in the opposite direction. Only move the Hanger Swirl Tool vertically in the mold. This wasn’t my most precise hanger swirl, so don’t worry about making it perfect!

TEN: Tap the mold on the counter to help get rid of any bubbles. Drizzle each color on top down the length of the mold.

ELEVEN: Insert a chopstick or dowel into the very top of the soap (you only want to swirl the very top). Drag the tool down the length of the mold opposite of the direction you poured the soap on top to create the most interesting swirl. Don’t over swirl or the colors will muddle. Once you’re happy with the look, spritz the soap with 99% isopropyl alcohol to avoid soda ash.

Due to the extra sugar in the applesauce, this soap may have a tendency to get hot. If your room temperature is on the cooler side, you can leave it out on the counter without insulation for the first 24 hours. If you live in a hot climate, you may want to place the soap into the fridge for at least 2 hours up to overnight. Allow the soap to stay in the mold for about 3 days. Remove from the mold and cut into bars. Allow the bars to cure for 4-6 weeks and enjoy!

Honeycrisp Apple Cold Process Soap Tutorial

This soap was inspired by Honeycrisp apples, and contains real applesauce!

Are you in the “yea” pumpkin spice camp, or the “nay” pumpkin spice camp? While I understand the desire to hang onto summer, I’m in the “YAY!” pumpkin spice category. I just love the change of seasons and crafting with fall-inspired scents. If you’re ready to celebrate fall, these Pumpkin Spice Latte Bubble Bath Bombs are the perfect way to do so. Why just drink a Pumpkin Spice Latte when you can bathe in one? Or better yet, maybe drink one while taking a bath!

These bath bombs have a lot of amazing things going on. They contain a small amount of Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate – SLSA in addition to the typical baking soda and citric acid mixture. The SLSA creates some bubbles in the bath in addition to fizz. If you prefer just fizz, leave out the SLSA and replace with more baking soda. Coffee butter adds a hint of coffee scent and skin-nurturing properties to the water. But wait, there’s more! Powdered Goat Milk is also in the recipe to give bath water milky properties. To help the coffee butter and the powdered colorants incorporate better in the water, I added Polysorbate 80 which can be omitted if you prefer.

What You’ll Need:
About 10-12 Bath Bomb Mold & Package
3 1/2 cups Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)
1/2 cup Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate – SLSA
2 cups Citric Acid
3 Tbs. Powdered Goat Milk
2 oz. Coffee Butter
6 mL Pumpkin Spice Fragrance Oil
5 mL Espresso Fragrance Oil
11 mL Polysorbate 80
Dutch Processed Cocoa Powder

ONE: In a large bowl, mix together 3 1/2 cups of baking soda, 2 cups of citric acid, 1/2 cup SLSA and 3 tablespoons of powdered goat milk. If there are any clumps in the mixture, you can push the powder through a sifter or break up the clumps with your fingers. Citric acid has a tendency to take off nail polish, so wear gloves to protect your manicure. SLSA is extremely powdery, so make sure you are in a well-ventilated room when adding it into the mixture. You may choose to wear a dust mask to prevent sneezing!

TWO: In a small heat safe container, add the 2 ounces of coffee butter. Place in the microwave and heat using 15-20 second bursts. Once completely melted, add the Pumpkin Spice Fragrance Oil, Espresso Fragrance Oil and Polysorbate 80. Use a spoon to thoroughly combine.

THREE: Pour the butter mixture into the dry ingredients. Use a spatula or your hands to thoroughly combine. I find it’s much easier to use your hands! =)

FOUR: Once all the ingredients are completely mixed, split them into three even-ish containers – it’s okay to eyeball it! I did find that I needed a little bit more of the white bath bomb mixture. If you use the same color pattern shown here, you may want to make one container slightly larger for the uncolored mixture. Just an extra handful or two of bath bomb mixture should do the trick!

FIVE: To one of the smaller containers, add 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder and use your hands or a spoon to completely mix in. To another container, add 1/4 teaspoon of Sunset Orange Mica and use a spoon or your hands to fully mix in. Leave the other (slightly larger) container uncolored.

SIX: Begin spritzing each container with witch hazel, while mixing with your hands or a spatula. Continue spritzing until the mixture is a texture that holds its shape when squeezed. I recommend spritzing each container from lightest to darkest (white, orange, brown) so you don’t mix the colors together. Below, you can see that the mixture forms a ball when squeezed. This means that the mixture will hold its shape in the mold as well.

SEVEN: Place several coffee beans into the center of one of the bath bomb molds. Then, place a small amount of white bath bomb mixture on top until the mold is about half full, and gently press with your fingers. Feel free to use any color order you’d like; I just liked this one best. =)

EIGHT: Cover the white mixture with brown bath bomb mixture, and firmly press to condense. Set aside.

NINE: Place a small amount of the orange bath bomb mixture into the opposite half of the bath bomb mold, until it’s about half full. Then, place more white bath bomb mixture on top and firmly press the mixture into the mold.

TEN: Add a little extra bath bomb mixture into each half, but don’t press it down. Slightly overfilling with “loose” bath bomb mixture helps the two sides to stick together better. Match up the eyelets of each mold, and press together. To avoid any imperfections on your bath bomb, make sure to direct pressure to the edges of the mold rather than the center. Allow the bath fizzies to harden in the mold for 24 hours. Remove from the mold once you’re ready to use, place in the tub and enjoy!

Note: Because these bath bombs contain powdered goat milk that has a shelf life of about 2 months, these bath bombs also have a shelf life of about 2 months and should be used within that time frame.

Pumpkin Spice Latte Bubble Bath Bomb

These bath bombs were inspired by the popular fall beverage. Powdered goat milk and coffee butter add extra luxury!

Orange lipstick has been popular for the past few years, especially during summer. It’s a surprisingly flattering hue for a wide variety of skin tones. These lip tints are made with the vibrant Sunset Orange Mica. It gives a light orange tint that can be built up to a more vibrant color. Scroll down to see the swatches!

The tints are made with coconut oil, organic cocoa butter cubes, white beeswax and avocado oil. It’s a firm texture that glides easily on the lips. I added Pineapple Flavor Oil for a light scent, and a touch of Lip Smacking Sweet Flavor Oil. The pineapple notes smell amazing combined with the chocolatey scent from the cocoa butter cubes.

Below, you can see how the balm looks on several skin tones. This swatch was built up a few times for a more vibrant color. If you prefer a softer color, you can use a lighter application. I used the Lip Balm Pouring Tray in this tutorial because the recipe creates a lot of balm. Rather than pouring the mixture into each tube one by one, the Lip Balm Pouring Tray makes it easy to fill up plenty of tubes at a time. You can see the tray in action in this Making Lip Balm video.

What You’ll Need:
30 Clear Lip Balm Tubes
2 heaping Tbs. Sunset Orange Mica
1.2 oz. Coconut Oil
1.2 oz. White Beeswax
1 oz. Organic Cocoa Butter Cubes
.8 oz. Avocado Oil
3 mL Pineapple Flavor Oil
3 mL Lip Smacking Sweet Flavor Oil
Droppers
Optional: Lip Balm Pouring Tray, White Spatula & Heat Gun

PREP TRAY: If using the Lip Balm Pouring Tray, insert the lip balm tubes into the bottom of the tray. Concentrate all the lip balm tubes into one end. This makes it easy to scrape the lip balm into the cavities if needed. Place a few lip balm tubes at the opposite end to stabilize the tray. To see this tray in action, check out this lip balm video on Soap Queen TV.

ONE: In a small, heat-safe container, add the coconut oil, cocoa butter cubes, white beeswax and avocado oil. Place in the microwave and melt using 30-60 second bursts. Beeswax has a high melting point and takes quite a long time to melt. Be careful – because of the high melting point, the heat-safe container can melt or explode in the microwave if it gets too hot.

TWO: Once everything is completely melted, add the Pineapple Flavor Oil and the Lip Smacking Sweet Flavor Oil and stir to combine.

THREE: Add the Sunset Orange Mica, and stir to combine. Make sure to get rid of any clumps.

FOUR: Once the mixture is completely blended and smooth, begin pouring it into the tubes. If using the tray, don’t worry too much if some of the lip balm doesn’t make it into a tube. It can be scraped off the tray and used later! If necessary, remelt the lip balm in the microwave using 10-20 second bursts.

FIVE: Once all the balm has been poured, allow it to harden for several minutes in the tray. Then, scrape off any lip balm from the tray that did not go into a tube with the white spatula. You can also use a kitchen knife or soap cutter. Place the leftover balm back into the container, remelt and pour it into any empty or partially full lip balm tube.

SIX: If you’d like to give the balms a nice smooth top, turn the heat gun on low and melt the top of the balms for just a second or two. This will also help get rid of the little “dots” in the center of the balms. Allow the lip balms to fully cool and harden, at least 3 hours. Once fully cooled, pull the tubes straight down from the tray. Pulling the tubes out at an angle will damage the top of the balm. If you’re a perfectionist, you can slice the top off the balm and melt the top with the heat gun to make it nice and smooth, as shown in this video.

Once the balm has cooled, put the caps on and enjoy. If you’re selling this lip balm, check out this post to learn how to correctly label it. We have found this balm has held up well in temperatures around 75 ° F. If you live in an extremely hot climate, store the lip balm in a cool place to prevent it from melting in the tube.

• Optional: Lip Balm Pouring Tray & White Spatula

PREP TRAY: If using the Lip Balm Pouring Tray, insert the lip balm tubes into the bottom of the tray. Concentrate all the lip balm tubes into one end. This makes it easy to scrape the lip balm into the cavities if needed. Place a few lip balm tubes at the opposite end to stabilize the tray. • In a small, heat-safe container, add the coconut oil, cocoa butter cubes, white beeswax and avocado oil. Place in the microwave and melt using 30-60 second bursts. Beeswax has a high melting point, and takes quite a long time to melt. Be careful – because of the high melting point, the heat-safe container can melt or explode in the microwave if it gets too hot.
• Once everything is completely melted, add the Pineapple Flavor Oil and the Lip Smacking Sweet Flavor Oil and stir to combine.
• Add the Sunset Orange Mica, and stir to combine. Make sure to get rid of any clumps.
• Once the mixture is completely blended and smooth, begin pouring it into the tubes. If using the tray, don’t worry too much if some of the lip balm doesn’t make it into a tube. It can be scraped off the tray and used later! If necessary, remelt the lip balm in the microwave using 10-20 second bursts.
• Once all the balm has been poured, allow it to harden for several minutes in the tray. Then, scrape off any lip balm from the tray that did not go into a tube with the white spatula. You can also use a kitchen knife or soap cutter. Place the leftover balm back into the container, remelt and pour it into any empty, or partially full lip balm tube.
• SIX: If you'd like to give the balms a nice smooth top, turn the heat gun on low and melt the top of the balms for just a second or two. This will also help get rid of the little "dots" in the center of the balms. Allow the lip balms to fully cool and harden, at least 3 hours. Once fully cooled, pull the tubes straight down from the tray. Pulling the tubes out at an angle will damage the top of the balm. If you're a perfectionist, you can slice the top off the balm and melt the top with the heat gun to make it nice and smooth.
• Once the balm has cooled, put the caps on and enjoy. If you're selling this lip balm, check out this post to learn how to correctly label it. We have found this balm has held up well in temperatures around 75 ° F. If you live in an extremely hot climate, store the lip balm in a cool place to prevent it from melting in the tube.
