It’s day three of Father’s Day Week. Today’s project is homemade shaving soap enhanced with Vitamin E Oil and Kaolin Clay. The soap has a smooth, thick lather and a refreshing fragrance, Kentish Rain. Pair it with an old fashioned shaving brush and say good bye to Dad’s 5 o’clock shadow!

The best part about this project is that the soap is made right in the mug that you’re going to give Dad, leaving you with virtually no clean up.
Shaving Soap Instructions: Melt 3 ounces of Shaving Soap in the microwave (30 seconds will do the trick). Once the soap is melted, mix in 1/2 teaspoon of Kaolin Clay, 1/8 teaspoon of Vitamin E Oil and 1/2 ml of Kentish Rain. It will look clumpy at first which is perfectly normal, just keep mixing until smooth. Give it a spritz with rubbing alcohol to get rid of air bubbles and let the soap cool in the mug until solid.
Instructions for Dad:Wet the brush with water and lather the soap in the mug with the shaving brush. Then proceed with normal shaving routine.

I bought a beautiful shaving kit for my DH several years ago – with a silver & porcelain soap bowl & a gorgeous boars’ hair brush. The only drawback has been the soap refills – $30 for two 3.4oz bars! So glad I found brambleberry & soapqueen… I’ll be able to make twice as many bars at half the cost!! <3
Because the bowl is shallow, I think I'll make it up in a pyrex measuring cup & pour it into his bowl to cool – how quickly does the Shaving M&P base set up?

The shaving melt and pour base does set up as quickly as any of our other melt and pour bases — the cooler the temperature the faster it will set up. Typically, we like to keep our temperature within the 130 range when making melt and pour soap.

I just tried making this soap two separate times, one with lime, one with bay rum, and I’ve found it to have an odd, chemical type scent. I re-melted the soap, added more fragrance, but the smell still remains present, similar to what the base alone smells like. How much fragrance can I add before the oil ratio is off?

That’s odd that your soap smells chemically, what M&P base are you using?
The best way to figure out how much FO or EO to add to your soap is going to be the fragrance calculator. All you need to do is input the amount of soap you are making and choose your scent and it will pop up with some great usage rates. And, you can even go a little more then the highest one since this is a wash-off product.

The Spearmint Eucalyptus would a be a fabulous fragrance oil for this recipe, you could also use the Moroccan Mint FO if he is a fan of the minty scents. It’s very clean and crisp and I bet he would love it!

The Shaving Soap Base is enough for this soap, but the Kaolin Clay is great for sensitive skin!

Would you advise against adding Aloe extract to this recipe?
Not at all! Keep it to 1-2% max of the recipe so it doesn’t soften it up too much =)

We found our mugs at Goodwill – a second-hand shop here in Bellingham. But you could also purchase some from a promotional product site and have your business printed on them or any unique image. Hope this gives you some ideas to get started, Happy Soaping!
I’ve been searching for mugs for shaving soap for a while now and can not find mugs with a decent price. I mean I could go to a local store and purchase mugs but was hoping some online soap shop would carry mugs for a better price. I guess it’s just not popular enough to be practicle for supply places to carry mugs.
