Many men are no-fuss when it comes to bath and beauty products. While women can have a routine five steps long, many guys like simple and quick. This Walnut Facial Scrub is just that…truly simple! With only four ingredients including fragrance, this scrub offers plenty of exfoliation. The new Bramble Berry Made to Measure Type Fragrance Oil is a fantastic masculine scent, based on the popular cologne. The combination of walnut shells, baking soda and kaolin clay create a neutral appearance that’s not too fussy or feminine.
To use, apply the dry scrub directly to wet, clean skin. Or, place the scrub in your hands and add a few drops of water to make a paste. People with dry skin might prefer mixing the scrub with oil before each use. Avocado oil, argan oil or sweet almond oil would work well. Apply the scrub 2-3 times a week. If you’re a lady, you can still use the scrub! But, you may want to use a different fragrance or omit the fragrance oil altogether. Because this recipe does not contain water, you don’t need to add a preservative to this recipe. Read more about preservatives here.

We don’t, but it’s something we can look into! We found the wooden scoops at a local craft store. You may check there to see if you can find them. 🙂

Would lemon peel work okay in this recipe?
Kelsey says
Absolutely! It will add light exfoliation and a subtle scent. You can replace the clay or walnut shells with lemon peel powder, or add it to the mix. 🙂

Joe says
If I add oil to this to make it a wet, rather than dry scrub (jojoba or avacodo seem most appropriate), would I need to use a preservative? If so, what would you recommend? Thanks!
Kelsey says
Hi Joe!
That’s a great question! It depends a bit on where the scrub will be stored. Mold and bacteria can grow in the recipe if it has water. So, if your scrub is going to be stored in the shower where it will likely get water splashed in, you can add a preservative to be extra careful. This is also a good idea if you’re planning to sell the scrub. Phenonip or Optiphen at 1% would work well! If it’s going to be stored in a dry place, you can skip the preservative. 🙂

Would it be okay to switch out the baking soda with arrowroot powder? or? My son had sensitivities to baking soda when I tried making deodorant.
Kelsey says
Hi Sheri!
We didn’t test this recipe with arrowroot powder, but I believe that would be just fine! A small test batch may be helpful as well. 🙂

The Black Currant says
I can’t wait to make this for my boyfriend! He has very sensetive skin though so I’m worried the walnut shells will be too rough. Any suggestions?
Also, I want to make this an actual scrub and not just the powder version. How much water & preservative should I use for this recipe? Thanks! 🙂
Kelsey says
So glad you like the recipe! Colloidal oatmeal is a gentle exfoliant and would be a great option! Bamboo powder is another gentle exfoliating option. 🙂

Also, we didn’t try mixing this scrub with water, so I’m not entirely sure! How much water you add also depends on how scrubby you want the recipe to be. I would recommend starting out with 4 oz. of water and seeing how that feels. 🙂
Optiphen ND is great option for water-based recipes! You can add that at 1%. Read more in the Talk It Out Tuesday: Preservatives post: http://www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/lotion/talk-it-out-tuesday-preservatives/

If you are gonna use it with oil, for example, could you mix it with oil right away? I mean the whole jar to be mixed with oil? How much oil would you say for the tight consistency? Thanks!
Martina says
I mean “right consistency”. 🙂
Kelsey says
Hi Martina!
You can mix the oil and scrub in your hand right before using it. We didn’t test this recipe with oil in it, but I believe that would work just fine. How much oil you add depends on your personal preference. I would recommend starting out with about 4 ounces of oil. Give the scrub a mix and see if you like the consistency. 🙂

Francene says
This looks great, my question is. Would this be drying on the skin with the clay?
Kelsey says
Hi Francene!
If your skin is on the dry side, the clay can be a bit drying as it absorbs moisture. In that case, you can mix the scrub with an oil to make it more moisturizing. Avocado oil or sweet almond oil would work well. 🙂
