Get Smart. Use Bramble Berry Kits!

I just put our Soap Queen blog to the “Readability Test.” The results aren’t good. The average newspaper is written to an 8th grade level to appeal to a wide range of people. The Soap Queen blog is apparently not written for 8th graders. If it’s not easy reading, will people read it? And, if you are reading it faithfully, does it mean that you’re a genius? Or that I’m a genius?

I’m confused. But to read more about Readability Indexes, here‘s a great web site with a PDF download to discuss it.

  1. I am brilliant, but really? I think your blog is very readable. It is strange that it ranks it as being so high. Maybe it is because of the instructions — like it is viewing it as some sort of chemistry work? Hm. I don’t know — I think it is fine, and the whole WORLD should read it.

Then again, I’m very biased. 😉

When am I heading to Bellingham for that “Honeymoon Session” photo shoot???

  2. Michelle,

    You made bath cupcakes?

Email me a photo! I’d love to put it on the blog (info at brambleberry dot com)

  3. I’d like to think I’m the genius but I do believe it’s you!

My blog reads College (Postgrad). Although I’m not sure what that really means. College in Australia means high school and college in Malaysia is the transition phase between high school and university.

Anyway, I think it’s interesting. Oh, I made more bath cupcakes! 😀

    Michelle

  4. I like your blog. But then again, I hope I read above an eighth grade level.

And of course you are a genius. Really smart people make soap! :0)

  5. Aw, you’re sweet. I’m glad that you’re liking the blog.

I’m still a little traumatized that the blog isn’t considered very readable for the bulk of people out there. But um, I really think it’s straight forward writing (?) so the Readability Index book (80some pages!) will be something to read over Christmas break.

The blog is in a bit of transition, design wise, right now but we’ll get there. I’m sure I’ll be posting on design trials and tribulations soon enough. =)

  6. I also would like to learn more about Readability Indexes. I took the test on both my web & blog, with different results. My web readability index was elementary~ while my blog was rated College/undergrad level. I found this interesting thinking my web just does not contain as much “script” as my blog.

Are you a genius Anne-Marie. You certainly are! Hands-down I don’t know of anyone who has much energy, or insight as you. Your blog is a daily read not only for soap business news but, “what’s new” outside the soap world & forecasting the business of “business” for the future … thanks!

Post Script: Terrific Soap Queen character. You know we’ll want to hear the story behind her creation.
