There are so many designs that can be created with cold process soap. The ability to manipulate the texture from thick and pipeable to fluid and pourable allows a wide variety of possible techniques. For example, thin soap can be swirled in the mold to create a spin swirl. On the other hand, extremely thick soap can be piped and manipulated to create shapes and texture. If you can dream it, you can probably soap it!
Over the years, I have tried a lot of techniques and designs. With each tutorial here on the blog, I’m always thinking about what technique I have yet to feature. I love teaching and demonstrating the possibilities of all things soap, bath and beauty. Because of that, I thought it would be helpful to categorize just about every Soap Queen cold process tutorial by design type.
This Soap Design Directory is quite the list and includes everything from techniques created with thick soap (layers, textured tops, spoon plop) to thin trace techniques such as the spin swirl and linear swirl. Keep in mind this list focuses on the design elements and technique, rather than recipe type. In addition, some tutorials feature more than one technique so they may pop up in several categories. As I continue to publish tutorials, I will try my best to keep this list updated. But, if you don’t see it updated right away, just know I will get to it as soon as I can. =)
I hope you enjoy this design directory, and find it helpful and inspiring! It has helped me identify which techniques I need to showcase more. Stamped soap, confetti soap, feather swirl and petal techniques…I’m looking at you!

Can we order soaps from you?

We don’t sell the soap you see here, but we do sell the supplies to make it on our website: https://www.brambleberry.com/
Shae says
Have you ever heard of a technique called, “safour”? A member of my soaping group posted photos but I am not familiar with it and cannot find any info.
Kelsey says
We haven’t given that a try so I don’t know a lot about it. You may see if someone on teachsoap.com/forum knows more.

Hi
Thanks love the list and appreciate the time you must put into it all. Maybe it’s because I am seeing this through my phone…don’t know. But I would ask one thing…I pressed a couple of your links and yes they took me to the recipe/tutorial but no picture of the soap…I am a visual type of person and a pic would really help. Also I saw a soap of yours the other day that looked to either be black and white top or navy and white with what I could only describe as a vintage French type of swirl on top…please can we have the name of soap and a design technique tutorial.
Many many thanks
Barbara 😊
Kelsey says
Do you know which links didn’t include pictures? I can see what’s going on and get those updated!
Also, I’m wondering if the black and white soap is the Charcoal and Cedar Beer Soap: https://www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/charcoal-cedar-beer-cold-process-soap-tutorial/

Anna says
I also appreciate the time that was put into creating this list! Thank you! Being new to many of these techniques, I do not recognize them by name alone. Having a thumbnail photo of the soap bar beside each listing would be immensely helpful when browsing the list.
Kelsey says
You’re welcome, glad you’re enjoying this list! Thanks for your suggestion as well.

Dear SoapQueen/Brambleberry: I truly appreciate this list; it is bookmarked and I refer to it often. It is a real source of inspiration. Do you keep it updated as new posts, designs, recipes, etc. are added after June 2016 when this was created?
Kelsey says
We have updated it a couple times since then! We will try to update it periodically with new tutorials. 🙂
-Kelsey with Bramble Berry
Karen B in the Inland Northwest says
This is a great list! And I actually bookmarked it, so now I can find it again 😄
Kelsey says
Thank you Karen! There are so many fun techniques to try in cold process soap. 🙂

Rachael says
This is the best thing EVER! What a great way to check out different techniques. I’ve been dreaming of something like this!
Kelsey says
Thank you Rachael, glad you’re enjoying the directory! We’re really glad to hear that. 🙂

Jessica says
I love this post. So many great techniques, I can wait to try some of them.
A post I would love to see, and many it is already here somewhere and I just haven’t found it, but I would love to see a post about how to properly clean up after a soapy session. That would be really helpful, since there is a video and tutorial about every aspect of soap making but I have yet to find one about proper clean up.
Kelsey says
You’re welcome Jessica, glad you love this post! 🙂
Also, we have a post on cleaning up after a soapy session you may like: https://www.soapqueen.com/bath-and-body-tutorials/tips-and-tricks/clean-soapy-session/

Dana S says
How long before before CP can be removed from the mold?
Kelsey says
It usually takes about 2-3 days! If the soap is still fairly soft after 3 days, let it sit another day or two and try again. 🙂
To help it unmold more quickly, you can add 1 teaspoon of sodium lactate per pound of oils to your cooled lye water! Read more about using sodium lactate here: http://www.soapqueen.com/bramble-berry-news/sunday-night-spotlight-sodium-lactate/

Jin says
SUPERB!!! Thank you so much for this one, It’s brilliant!!! I love it so much!
Now this page feels like a really big and full closet right after spring clean. All fresh and shiny and inviting to try a little of everything!
Perhaps when you get in the mood next time, you could even make this directory look like a gallery, with all recipes in thumbnail photos instead of likes 😉
I would really love to see some more ideas of the negative embeds, the zebra swirl and yeah, the feather swirl. As for the confetti – I would love to see more ideas cause I kind of feeling like I’ve seen them all, but the pile of soap shavings just get bigger and bigger….
By the way, you have the confetti linked twice: first – right under Botanical/Natural Product Topped and then again, right above Landscape 😉
Thanks again for this wonderful idea of an article!
Kelsey says
You’re welcome Jin, so glad you love the directory! We’ll definitely keep your suggestions in mind. Also, thank you for the confetti soap catch. I updated the post so there’s only one confetti section. 🙂

Fabulous! I very much appreciate you taking the time to make this list up. I am one of those “organizer” types so your list really helps me review in my mind what techniques I know well or not and where I need to work. Bless you and THANK YOU!!!
Kelsey says
You’re welcome Marcie! Thank you so much for your sweet message. I’m a fan of organization and lists too. 🙂

Ceil says
Spin swirl cut horizontally and Clydes slide are 2 of my favorites. I think because it’s just so fun to not really have a certain idea of what it’s going to turn out like! 🙂
Kelsey says
That is so true! You never know exactly what you’re going to get, and each bar is slightly unique. They’re so much fun to cut into. 🙂

Marte says
Thank you for sharing this great post! This blog inspired me to go beyond making melt and pour soap and plunge into cold process 🙂 Your impressionist soap was the first cold process design I ever made! It’s beautiful
Kelsey says
You’re welcome Marte, glad you like the post! Your melt and pour and cold process designs are gorgeous. 🙂

Bee says
I’d like to see what others are doing with hand molded soap embellishments. There seems to be more soapers exploring this idea of using fondant, cookie cutters and other baking tools to create designs with cold process soap dough, other than molds.
Michael says
I use a lot of traditional cake decorating tools and presses/stamps/piping and non-traditional molds. But I don’t use any social media so I can’t post pictures; and i don’t want people copying my stuff anyway.
Kelsey says
I’ve seen your designs Bee, they’re amazing! It’s definitely something we can look into for future blog posts as well. 🙂
